AN EDITOR SHOOTS.
Col. A, W. Slayback, of St. Louis,
was Bbot and killed in the editorial
rooms of the St. Louis Pod-Digp&tch
by Col John. A. Cockrell, of that jour
nal who made the following statement
of the affair before the coroner’s jury:
“A few minutes past five o’clock I
was sitting at my desk, talking with
Mr. McGuffin, the business manager
of the paper, and Mr. Cole, the fore
man. The door was closed. My pis
tol was lying on my desk, for I had
intended to place it in my pocket in
changing my coat on leaving the of
fice. Suddenly the door opeped and
two men entered, closing the door be
hind them. I was facing the door.
I recognized Colonel Slayback and
Mr. Clopton, a lawyer,' who had a few
days before assaulted two members of
bis profeSbion in bis private office.
I realized that I was to be assaulted,
and arose from my chair. Col. Slay-
back’s bearing was that of a man
bent on violence. His first words
were : •'Well; I am here.’ He started
os if to. draw off his coat. I was in
the corner .next to the front window.
Instinctively I moved my hand to-
ward the weapon on the desk. He
sow it ond suddenly readjusted bis
ooat and said i {Is that for me ?” at
the same time throwing his hand to
his hip pooket ,Mv reply was:
•No, sirbut I secured . my weapon.
As he draw bis he presented it ot me
and I bturd him cook it I shouted :
•Don’t do t^atl’ and at the same time,
while bis weapon was pointed at my
breast, I fired, believing myself nt the
moment a dead man.
“I knew nothing of the effect of
the shot, for he closed with me and
thrust his revolver ngainst my side.
At the same time Clopton approached
hie from behind nnd tried to wrest
my pistol from my hand, which was
hanging by my side. I shouted to
Mr. McGuffin : ‘Don't lot these uieu
kill me.’ Ho tore Col. Slayback’s
pistol from bis band and pointed it
at Olopton’fl head, under the impres
sion, I presume, that ho was trying to
shoot me. At that instant Col. Slay-
back released his grasp upon mo, and
•I realized for the first time that be
had boon hurt. I left the room, while
Mr! Clopton was calling for a doctor,
ujy li.-ud bleeding from a cut received
when I was forced against the win
dow in the souffle, and went into the
lower, office to wash myself. ’

Such is tho condition of Governor

disregard the will of the people, and
make the race for the United States
