Dead Rata;
■ • •••..Stoll/-:
For some time psst Mr^JobaMOar-
lisle, a well-to-do farmer o/ t&is conn-
try, has been ^ftqbtsdvintfa ratA-^
There stands on bis place, in one of
bis roost fertile fields, a tenant- log
cabin, which for several years bias
been unoccupied, and of late has been
nsed by the proprietor as a general
storage house, about two hundred
bushels of peas in the hull being the
last article it contained. In the earl;
spring Mr. 0. planted the field on
one side of bis cabin in corn, and
when tbe oora grew up to half-leg
high something<b*gan.to eut4i
and by close watobing he found that
the rats weM^yfa$p»d jhavoo irith.
bis corn, and he positively states that
they cut down two acres of the cereal
for him. Qn the other side of the
house he -planted cotton, and with
equal emphasis he says the little ver*
mints Absolutely dag the cotton seed
from the rows and sat then^np; ^
jug them to* such an extent that be
had to plant over about two or three
acres. So bad did they become at
this time that he determined to try
poison; so he bought of Dr. Bard well
a lot of “rough on rafs,” and put ft
out, and he says that, it killed so
many of them that the vultures cqme
and feasted on tbe carcasses. This
had the effect to stop their depreda
tions for awhile—at least until the
cotton began to open, when Mr. Car
lisle soon bad trouble with the jnts
again. They ebeolateIy.|j<ti^A P 8
cqtton ns fast as it opened'by picking
it from the bolls, eating the seed, and
scattering it all over the field. He
tried rnt poison again, fro£ without
success, as the rats seemed to have
learned better and refused^
He next examined his peas
bad storecUujthaJhpuse, wj
covered that tbe rats bad eaten
all but about 60 bushels. Up
on making tbif. discojer^Jftj Car
lisle determined to make a new and
different war upon the rats, so last
Thursday^ srimmoMd^- .forpes
'and went to battle. He is the pos
sessor of two fine bulldogs, and with
these and five colore4,«p|0 lmjtfgan
to tear downttie'dtii bhfcJnek td tbe
honsc. Tbe house being located in
an open field, the rats had poteens
of escape from tho dogs hud’tli'o men,
and ns tho chimney was polled down
they poured out by hundreds,aDd were
killed as fast aS they cable. This was
kept up without intermission until the
chimney was torn down td iti fduridn-
tion, when it was discovered that tho
rats hail tunneled into the ground,
aud hail a tunnel from tho chimney
to an old hollow stump about twenty
yards distant. This tuunel was about
twelve inches in diameter, rohnfl abd
smooth, with a large bed about every
ten feet, where tbe young were raised,
and Mr. Carlisle says that the hole
was jaupued fall of rats from tho
ehidndy t6 the stump.' Aik rat tun
nel was dag oat and destroyed by
inches by Mr.vjO. and his assistants,
and be says that the rats were killed
as they came to them, tbe. dogs hik
ing an active part all the way
through, and enjoying the fun huge
ly. Some of the rats were so large
that the dogs bad regular battles
with them, and the rats would grab
the dogs by the nose and bring a yell
from them every time. 4
The work lasted a half day, and
when ended Mr. Carlisle had an emp
ty Hour barrel brought and bad the
dead ruts measured, os’ there were
too many to count. He says that
there were more than three barrels of
them, piled on as long as tho barrels
would hold, and ho estimates the
number at more than three thousand.
Many may discredit this rat story,
but Mr. Carlisle says ho can prove it
to the satisfaction of any man. He
solemnly declares it to be tbe truth.
Now, then, who can beat it?
The conditions of success are these:
First, work; second, concentration;
third, fitness. Labor is tho genius
which changes tho ugliness of the
world in beanty—that turns the
greatest curse into a blessing.
