them possible end practicable. An
artesian well then, is a hole bored in
to the earth, (into which a pipe is in
serted) to a sufficient depth; to, strike
a stream of water, whijj^ 'fepm the
nndnlatipns. of the. •Brill's surface
flows from a .higher altitude than the
one at wbiob the bore pipe is inserted.
In obedience to tbe well known prin
ciple that "water seeks iteown lettel,”
tbe water from this stream will rise
throngh the pipe to a level corres
ponding with that from which it chare
in some instances mounting to a great
bight into the air.
Haring learned what an artesian

important question:

Facts go to show-that it most cer
tainly can/ We know of no instance
in which it has been impossible to ob
tain a flow of water Of some kind.—
Instances exist in which tbe water did
not prove wholesome and palatable
for domestic purposes, bnt never fails
to flow—if yon dig long enough. The
danger from this latter canse, howev
er, is reduced to a minimum, as in al
roost every instance the water is sat

, THE DEPTH
To which it is necessary to bore is the
nert question that engages onr atten
tion. Of coarse the only way to an
swer this question is to refer to wells

1,250 and 1,970 feet) from 823 to 475
feet in depth. ImCoosaw, S. C., is an
artesian well 760 feet deop; atTooms-
boro, Qa., one 400 feet i deep, i and in
our sister city, Albany, there are two,
one of which is 630 feet nfts^other
a little less. TbomssviUsli uncom
pleted well is now 700 feet and, tbe
work is still being pushed. With this
data before us then, it would seem to
be safe to conclude that a well in
Brunswick would probably not require
a greater depth than five or six bun
dred feet. However, this is more spec
ulation, and a trial will be the only
way to establish the matter definitely.
As regards
CAPACITY, . • | j
Wo have no very definite data. ^1
bany’s wells, if wo mistake not, have
a flow of abbot 30 gallons her min-
uto each, which will make 1800 gal-
lijps per hour, or 43,200 gallons overy
twenty-four hours. One of the exper
imental #jil| in Charleston, pbove al
luded tb, oarf-flow of 260 gallons per
minute, or 360,000 gallons in twenty-
four hours.. /The water flowing from
the wells cited is, we bolieve, whole
some aud good for domestio use, sev
eral of them being strqp^jl/ miners*,
and, as such, possessing very valua
ble medicinal properties. Albany’s
wells are highly esteemed from this
standpoint, Bad one of the Charleston
wells is regarded as an almost infalli
ble cure for dyspepsia, and kindred
ills. A very large and deep well is
now being bored in Charleston by tbe
water work company for use in tbe
supply of the gity. A very important
item, to which we will now refer—
probably tbe most important—is
the cost
Of tbe several wells, in relation to
which we possess statistics:
First, then, we refer to the Albany
wells, the first of which was bored at
a cost of $1,450 and the second, under
contract, for $1,150, (not counting
the machinery). Tbe cost of the
Toomsboro well, exclusive of machin
ery, which is now on hand, was $500.
Thomasville’s well will probably cost
far in excess of either of the above, as
the first outlay for machinery, in that
