New Yoke, October 19.—Judge Van
Brunt to-day, in the Court of Common
Pleas, rendered a decision on a mo
tion recently argued before him, in an
action brought by the Jerome Park,
Villa Site and Improvement Company
against the Board of Police Commis
sioners for an injunction to restrain
the defendants from interfering with
the business of “bookmarking” at the
Jerome Park Races. The Judge de
nies the motion, holding that under
the law of 1277 betting or gambling
if unlawful, and therefore no ixijunC
tion should issue in, the action.

While staying in water 100 hours
in Boston, Captain Webb used as a
dining table a board about' thirty
iches square, with an edge raised
about it to prevent the water from
splashing and wqtting the food, and
also to preventibolood from slipping
into tbs water. In tbe centre of this
board, onderneatb, was a handle sim
ilar to the handle of a mortar board ;
and with this the Captain atsadied
and fed himself with the other.

Tbe following is dipped from an
English paper: The American papers
contain the annonneement that a
work entitled “A Tribute from the
Citizens of Jersey City to the Memo
ry of General Garfield has been pre
pared. Two copies only have been
printed, one being intended for pre
sentation to Queen Victoria, and the
other to Mrs. Garfield. The work is
considered to be tbe finest piece of
printing ever done in the Unitod
States. The copy for the Queen is
bound in full red Levant morocco,
with blue watered silk linings, full
gilt-back, and edge gilt in the round.
That for Mrs. Garfield is bound very
similarly, except that the tint of the
leather is brown, and the lining is of
cardinal ted embossed silk. Great
care has been taken that only twe
copies should bo printed.
The latest claim against the Gar
field estate is that of Mrs. Dr. Susie
Edson, who wants $10,000 for her
services as a physician. Mrs. Edson
hesitated a long time whether to call
herself a nurse or a physician. She
finally settled on tbe latter tide, as
she thought it would command for
her claim more favorable considera
tion. Ten thousand dollars ns a plaiu
nurse would sound rather steep, even
if the patieut was a President. Drs.
Bliss, Agueau and Key burn, however,
have, by their extravagant kills, made
that sum quite moderate for n prac
ticing physiciuu, notwithstanding
that such physician is a fonialo.
