A new variety of cotton plant baa
been brought to
where great things of {ti
lt is the product of .the hybridisation
I of the-oottonf plantwith the common
' okra—both of them indigenous to
I Florida, where the new plant has been
[ reared. The hybrid,, which attains
the height of about two feet, has the
stalk of okra and the foliage of the
I cotton, but the dower and fruit are
said to be very unlike either parent.
The flower, of which each plant ooly
bears one, is as large as the magnol
ia, and nearly as fragrant. It, like
the cotton bloom, is white for several
days after it opens; later, it becomes
I pale pink, and finally red, “when it
drops, disclosing a wonderful boll.”—
For about ten days the boll resembles
that of the cotton plant, when its
growth, “as if by magio," increases
wonderfully, aud it finally reaches the
I size of a large cocoannt Then the
lipt or cotton down appears, of which
[ each boll prodnoes about two pounds
of a fine long staple superior to the
| sea island cotton. The great advan
tage which this cotton possesses is
I the ease , with which the boils can be
[ gathered, an unskilled picker being
able to pick six or seven hundred
pounds weight in a day. ▲ still fur-
I (her advantage consists in the ab
sence, or rather the peculiar disposi
tion of the seeds, wbioh instead of be
ing mixedjwith the lint, lie at the bot
tom of the boll. There are only four
or five of these seeds, which resem
ble persimmon seed, and can be easi
ly shaken out as the boll is placked,
ro that the cotton reqaires no gin
ning. The saving in expense occa
sioned by the redaction of labor both
in picking and ginning are likely to
cause this hybrid cotton to snpplunt
the gossypium, even if its produce
were not of superior quality attribut-
I ed to it.

President Artbnr looks ridiculous
enough in the fashion-plate dresses

tailors publish him, but, according to
what I am told, his real appearance
is still moi'ii absurd since bo took to
dressing Itin.fi’eK in , t style more suit

President of a nation of sturdy Re

rately clocked, quilted' white, jackets,
elaborately embroidered waistcoat,
patent leather pnmps with rosettes,
are but samples of the affectations
which ho now affects. I do not hear
that he has appeared at tho White
House in velvet knickerbockers, but
lie is fast coming to these.
