An Honest Statement <?f What'we Saw. According to advertisement, Bar rett’s circus and menagerie exhibited in our town on last Monday. We bod the pleasure of a call during , the morning from the press agent, Mr. Cobb, whom we found to be a very entertaining and pleasant gentleman. Mr. Cobb extended to u£ the usual courtesies to the press, and asked that we state to the public our honest con victions in regards to the excellence of the show of which he is the repre sentative, and to the fulfilment of the promise then made we proceed. First comes the street parade. This was undoubtedly far superior to the last seen on our streets, and was in many points a success. It was indeed a pleasing sight, and one long to be remembered. The first performance of the day was witnessed by probably the larg est concourse of people ever assem bled in Brunswick. As we entered the enclosure, we were taken in charge by Mr. Cobb, who conducted us through the departments, showing us every possible courtesy. The me nagerie, we are forced to say, was up to neither the standard nor the adver tisements. The collection was not large, and certainly could not boast of many rare animals. “Fifty blazon ed cages of wild beasts" are adver tised, bat we saw them not, twenty being fat nearer the truth. The “sev en menageries” did not contain the “white Nile hippopotamus,” neither was it our good fortune to feast our eyes upon the much-advertised “blood-sweating behemoth of holy writ,” nor the pair of “gigantic gi raffes,” “drawing Roman chariots.’ The “riding cynocephalus” and “five- ton performing rhinoceros” were al so absent—probably indisposed on the occasion of our visit. The “Ab yssinian - babyronssa,” “hogopopoti mus,” “hurdle-racing reindeer” and several other advertised animals had, we suppose, been turned loose to graze-at least, they were not in sight. One zebra in a cage was the only representative of the performing drove of these beasts, which, accord ing to tbn teachings of natural, histo ry, cannot be tauied or trained. Hav ing made excuses for the non-appear ance of several features which our people desired to see, wo will now say a word in regard to what we did see. The “lion slayer” was indoed interesting, and was to us a curiosity. Several very fine specimens of the li on avo on exhibition, and tfce tiger is indeed a fino representative of his specie. Tho same may also bo suid of the African eland, the yak of Tar- torv,' ete. Indeed all animals on ex hibition were up to standard. Some thin*' was wrong about tho “Arctic aquarium of polar mammoths,” as one rather small sea lion was alone in his glory to answer at roll cull for his brethren, the white bear, walrus, sea elephant, ete. We will pass over several other dis crepancies between the advertise ments and tho facts, and pass on to the circus department. Here we found things different. The perform ance was fairly up to the average m almost every particular, and in somo even excelled. The trapeso perform ances, somersaulting, leaping and oth er hcrobatic feats were very ne. Taken as a whole, the performance was very good, and had no more than the average number of humbugs. One noticeable feature was the ab sence of all obscene and profane lan- gaago in the ring, which so often dis graces otherwise good performances. In this particular Barrott’s Bhow is entitled to great praise. Iu accordance with our promise we have made an honest statement of facts as they occur to our mind. Sev eral other inconsistencies were no- pabifo prdM^g ■ mofe thaa it is possible to falfil. We close with the remark that we believe every one got the worth of bis money, though not a few were sadly disappointed. The Mr. A. Y. Putnam has now associa ted with him in the mercantile busi ness M«r Alien McDonald, an honest upright son qf old McIntosh, county. “*■ i aew fifjro jsre' addingtahw - attrac- tiblsto* tblirfetdckjlksJ&eiit needs diolaije. : tbejy ejill special attention this Week ti> their stock of children’s shoes, several styles of which have been added.
