| A Woman Alone In » When the house is all alone by it self, inexperienced persons may~be- liev.o that it bebaves.exaotly as i^oes when there are people, in it. M that is a delusion, as yon will discover if vo.1 are ever left alone in it at mid night sitting up for the rest of the family. At this boor its true dispo sition will reveal itself. To catch it at its best, pretend to retire, put out the gas and go up stairs. Afterwards come down slowly and light no more than one lamp, go into the empty parlor and seat your self at a table with something to read. No sooner have you done so than you will hear a chip, chip, along the top of the room—a small sound, but persistent. It is evidently the wall paper coming oft and you de cide, after some tribulation, that if it does come off you can’t help it, and go With your hook. As yon sit with your book in your hand jou begin to be quite sure that some one is coming down stairs.— Squeak—squeak—squeak 1 What fol ly 1 There is nobody to come down; but tfiere— no, it is on the kitchen stairs. Somebody is coming up. Squeak—snap I Well, it is a rob ber, you might os well face him. You get tbe poker and stand with your back against the wall. Nobpdy comes up. Finally, you decide that yon are a goose, put tbe poker down, get a magazine and try to read. There, that’s the door. You beard tho lock turn? They aro coming home. You run to the back door, unlock and unbolt it, and peep out. Nobody tbero? But, as yon linger, the door lock gives a click that makes yon jump. By daylight neither lock or stairs make any of these noises unless .they are touched or trodden on. '■'» ' * You go back to the parlor in sher ry, with a f|elingUi^f tbs next thipg you know something may catch you by the back hair, and you try to re member where yog‘)eit off. Now it is tbe table that MinpR and cracks as if all the spiritualistic knocks woro bidden in its mahogany. You do not lean on it heavily without this result, but it fidgets yon, and you tako an easy chair and put the book on vujur knees. Yost oyes' wander tip and down’the pages and yon grow dreamy, when apparently tho booWaae fires off a pistol. At least, a lond fierce crock comes from the heart of that picco of furni ture—so loud, so fierce that you jump to your feet, trembling. You cannot stand tho parlor nny more. You go up stairs. No sooner do you get there than it seems to you that somebody is walk ing on tho roof. If the house is a de tached one, aud the thing ip impossi ble, that makes it all the more myste rious. Nothing ever moaned in the chim ney botoro, but something moans now, there is n ghostly step in the bathroom. Yon find out afterwards it is the tap dripping, but you do not daro to look out that time. And it is evident there is some thing up the chimney—yon wonkl not like to ask what. If you have gas it bobs np and down in a phantom dance. If you have a lamp it goes ont in a bine ex plosion. If you have a candle a shroud plainly enwraps tho wick and fall towards you. Tho blinds shako ns if a band clutched them; and, finally, a doleful Oat begins to moan in the cellar. Yon do not keep a cat, ami this finishes yon. Yon pretend lo read no longer, and sitting with a towel over your head utul fare, an-! hearing something be low go “shew, shew, shew,” like a lit tle saw, you believe in the old ghost stone*. T> n minutes hd<r tbe bells ring; tlm belated ones come home; the lights are lit; pe-lmps somalhing niu-t be got .out to eat. People talk aud !•!! where they have lx*. u and ad; i: And not a stair cracks. No step is heard on tbe roof, no click to tbe front door. Neither book-case nor table oracks. Tbe bouse bas on. its comply manners—only yon have found ont bow it behaves when it is alone. Snowed Under. Ltramto Boomerang. We have met tbe enemy and—we are his’n. We have made onr re marks, and we are now ready to lis ten to tbe gentlemen from New York. We could have dug out, perhaps, and explained about New York, but when almost every State in tbe Union rose np and made certain statements yes terday, we found that tbe job of ex plaining this matter thoroughly would be wearisome and require a great deaj of time. We don’t blame tbe Democracy for this. We are a little surprised, how ever, and grieved. It will interfere with our wardrobe thift winter. With an overcoat on Wyoming, a plug hat on Iowa, a pair of pantaloons on Pennsylvania and boots on the gen eral result, it looks now os though we would probably go through tbe win ter wrapped in a bed quilt and pro found meditation. We intended to publish an extra this morning, bat* the news was of Bach a character that we thought we could get along without it. Wbat was tbe use of publishing an extra with a Republican majority only in Red Buttes? The cause of this great Democratic freshet in New York yesterday—but why go into details ? We all have an idea why it was so. The number of votes would seem to indicate that there was a tendency toward Democ racy throughout the State. Now, in Pennsylvania, if you will look overlthe returns carefully—but why should we take up your valua ble time offering an explanation of a political matter of tho past? Under the circumstances some would go and yield to the soothing influences of the maddening bowl, but we do not advise that. It would qpjy furnish temporary relief, and the recoil would be unpleasant. We resume our arduous duties with a feeling of eptreme euniii, uud with that sense of, surprise and astonish meat that a mau does who has had a large brick block full on him when be w.is not expecting it. Although we feel a little lonely to-day—having met but a few Republicans on tho street, who were obliged to come ont and do their marketing—wo still hope for the future. The grand old Republican party but that’s wbat we said lust week. It souuds holiow now and tueauingh somehow, because our voice is a little bourse, and we nre now snowed under so deep that it is difficult fur us to enunciate. Now about those bets. If tho par- tie , to whom wo owe bets—and we owe most everybody—will just agree to take the ntukes and not go into de tails, not stopjto ask ns about the state of our mind, and talk about how it Was done, wo don’t care. Wo dou’t wish to have this thing explained at all. Wo are not of an inquiring turn of mind. Jnst plain facts are good enough for us, without nny harrowing detnils. In the meantime we are go ing to work to earn somo more mon ey to bet on the next election. Judge Folger and others, come over and sett ns when you have time and we will talk this matter over. Mr. B. Butler, we wish we had your longevity. With a robust constitution we find that most nny man can wear out cruel fate and get there at last. We do not feel so angry ns wo do griovod and surprised. We aro pained to seo tho American people thus betray our con fidence and throw a large wardrobe into the hands of the relentless foe.
