Last Monday and Tuesday were in deed two unpleasant days. Monday was rainy and wet, and Tuesday was cold and windy to adistressing extent, Had it not been for tbe excessive rains of Monday, however, the fire of the following morning would have been indeed disastrous. Risley, which oceurred on Saturday night, 18tb inst., from hemorrhage of the lungs, having broken a blood vessel in a se vere fit of coughing. U..pt. llisley was on > he retired list of the U. S. rmy, having been invalided from se vere wounds received in the late war. He was a Lieutenant in command hePo after the war, under the Freed- men’s Bureau, nnd built the Risley school house, for the education of colored children. In 1871 he was elected county treasurer on the Re publican ticket. Some two years since lie organized a cigar factory here, which, after doing a good busi ness, was burned out in June last, be ing nlmost a total loss, with but little insurance. Since then Cupt. Risley has been sick nearly all the time, and has nt Inst succumbed, We tender our sympathies to his sorrowing rela tives and friends. A Noted Need'll Sei iouely Cm. Macintire & Co., cor ner Monk and Oglethorpe streets, was found to be in flames. The wipd was blowing strongly from tbe northeast, and for a time the prospect of a seri ous conflagration was imminent The rain of the previous day and evening hud soaked the buildings and to this nnd a change of wind during tbe fire, together with the good service of the steHiu lire engine, may be attributed tbe fact that no more serious daiungo was done. The losses nre as follows: Wiley Bugg, two story frame build ing, occupied by B. F. Macintire & Co. on both floors ns cigar shop and factory, no insurance on building— loss, $800. B. F. Macintire & Co.’s insurance on stock nnd fixtures, $1,000, agency J. M. Dexter; $2,100, agency T. O’Connor, jv. A. M. Cohen bad a stock of ready made clothing ou first floor. No insurance, loss unkuowu. Tho adjoining two story frame build ing, owned aud occupied by W. F. Doerfliuger A Co., retail liquors, was destroyed, part of stock being saved; insured for $1,200 in agency of T. O'Connor, Jr. The flames crossed Oglethorgo street and burnt store of F. M. Dart, grocer, no insurance—to tal loss; also building belonging to H. C. Mundy—no insurance. Stock of goods of D. Davis, partially removed and damaged—no insurance. Also burnt the hnilding formerly used us a steam grist mill, occupied by M. A. Wiggins ua a green grocery nnd meat shop. The building on corner Monk and Grant streets, occupied by T. 15. (i,10.11 The Brunswick Harbor. Gen. Wright, Chief Engineer of tbe United States Army, has just com pleted bis annua) report for the fiscal year ending June 30th last. In it tbe following report is made of tbe progress of the work in onr harbor: Tne aggregate length of the jetty is now 2,104 feet, Daring the last fiscal year 16,016 onbio yards of mate rial were dredged ou a line parullel to the jetty, ard about 720 feet last of it. Two cuts Lave been made through the shoal to a low water depth of 16 feet. Tbe cats nre about 4,400 feet long, nnd eaoh one ie from 20 to 25 feet wide. Two other cuts of the same width have been carried partly over the shoal to a depth of only 12 feet. Tbe jetty work stands well, and tbe low water depth of 15 feet, obtained by dredging, have shoaled up iu a few places nuly, reducing tbe depth to 13 aud 14 feet. Since tbe survey of 1879 the upper end of the brand) on whioh tbe town of Bruns wick is located has sho.iled up con siderably, indicating that some works will be needed to aid tbe flow' of wa ter tbrougb the branch. A project for some works nt tho upper end of the branch will be prepared.
