vating to polities, or purifying to the
ballot-box. It was almost impossible
for the officers to keep the line form
ed. Some women, instead of forming
in line, would march np to the head
of the line, just as they do at the
post-office, and if not allowed to rote
then, would not vote at all. Others
would step out of line to chat with
some lady friend whom they “had

Cincinnati now opens her theatres
on Sunday night us well as on other
nights of the week. The first at
tempt to do this, two weeks ago, met
no disturbance from the authorities
during the performance, but the man
agers and actors were subsequently
arrested, and the former fined $50
each, which they decided they could
bear, as the Sunday night patronage
warranted the outlay. Tho practice
is to be continued until the question
is settled.
The way it snows in Idaho is told
in the Wood River Times, which says
A gentleman who recently came down
from Galena states that sixty-nine
feet of snow fell at that place Inst
season. The measurement was taken
ou a board projecting from the roof
of a shed. The enow on the board
was brushed off every twelve hours.
This allowed the falling snow to settle
at least one-third before being brush
ed off. It is therefore probable that
tbe snowfall reached ninety feet.

That veteran politician, Alexander
H. Stephens, recently iuaugnrated aa
Governor of Georgia, is really enti
tled to much of the credit for tbe
present system of weather reports.—
Thirty years ago Gov. Stephens, then
a Representative in Congress from
Georgia, had rooms at Mrs. Duncan's
boarding house, at the corner of D
and F streets, in Washington.—
Among the other boarders at that
house was an eccentrio Pennsylvania
schoolmaster <natned Prof. Espey, who
had began to be known as tbe storm
king. Prof. Espey had just published
a new system of jpeetorology, which
was not received with favor by Amer
ican scientists, with the exception of
Prof. Henry, of the Smithsonian In
stitute. The Professor had, however,
visited Paris, nnd had submitted his
views to severul distinguished French
philosophers, who thought well of
them. Gov. Stephens, feeling assured
of tbe great practical usefulness of
the meteorological lawB taught by
Professor Espey, under a proper sys
tem of speedy communication between
distant points, suggested the impor
tance of “Daily Telegraphic Weather
Reports." Tbe professor approved
the suggestion, but tbe question was
how was the expense to be met. Gov.
Stephens proposed to inquire nnd see
if tbe telegraph companies would not
send to Washington daily short
weather reports from tho distant cit
ies without charge, while ho, Gov.
Stephens, would see Colonel Seaton,
of the National Intelligencer, nnd ask
him to publish them as items of gen
eral news, without charge. Both
parties so solicited readily complied,
nnd this was the origin of the daily
weather reports.
At first they were exceedingly mea
gre, such as, “New Orleans, rain—
wind southwest;" “Chicago, dear,
cold—wind northwest.’’ It was from
this germ that tbe magnificent system
of weather reports now made by the
signal sorvice sprang. They were
first issued by General Meyer, who
claimed to be the inventor of tbe
code of ting signals which ha intro
duced into the army, and which were
of such great use during the war.

Mr. Sabine Morse haB determined
to produce his Passion Play iu New
York, dospite public sentiment against
it, nnd Mr. William M. Wnnnomncb-
or, a young temperance lecturer nnd
preacher of Philadelphia, is to enact
tbo part of tbe Savior. He is describ
ed ns a young man of medium height,
with fioely chiseled features aud at
tractive eyes. It is said that somo
. years ago, when Mr. Morse, tho au
thor of tho drama, produced it iu Sau
Francisco, Mr. Wannorancher was
much impressed by it. He became
imbued with a strong religious fervor,
and entored n theological seminary in
Sau Fraucisco. While engaged
studies, ho made temperance lectures,
which were very successful. Beiug
struck with the part of tho “Nnza-
rone” iu the play, he came to Phila
delphia, nod during tho'pust three
years has been studying the charac
ter. When Mr. Morse determined
to reproduce the play iu Now York,
Mr. Wannemncher offered to
sumo tho part of tho Saviour.
Mr. Wannemncher believes tbo play
will bo the means of converting many
p eople to a belief in thh Savior. He
declares that he feels the pnrt which
he will perform.
Gamblers are becoming unpopular
ia thft West. A committee of resi
dents of Pino Bluff, Ark., posted a no
tice that all blacklegs found in town
after three days would be banged,
and tho fraternity beat a hasty re-
treat. At Delumeter, Col,, tbe cord
swindlers were more obdurate, and
oue had to be dipped in tar before his
fellows becstno convinced that their
departure was really for tbo best. At
Fresno, Arizona, tbe pursuit of gam
bling is left to a committee, who un
dertake to prevent cheating, and no
gambler can do any business unless
licensed.
Tbe Stale Department has issued a
pamphlet entitled “Ostrich Farming
in tbe United States,” which contains
“full information concerning ostrich
farming at the Cape of Good Hope
and Algeria, from the batching of the
eggs to tbe export of the feathers, to
gether with tbe estimated expense of
importing birds into the United
States, and the probabilities of the
success of tbe experiment.”
The energy of the human heart,
working day nnd night while lifo lasts,
is enormous. During nil overage
working day a good climber can only
raise his own weight 1,000 feet an
hour, wbilo the work of the heart is
estimated fo be equivalent to raising
its own weight (ten ounces); 13,SCO
feet high in an hour. This is about
five times the energy of the mqst pow
erful steam engine ever made.
