The Dawson Journal gives the fol- lowiog details of forming, in TerreU ctfifotjr: ■ Mr. J. B. F. Harrell, of this county, has raised this year on a six male farm 1,500 bushels of oats, 90 bushels . of wheat, 1,800 bushels of corn, 1,400 bushels of potatoes, 1,300 gallons - of syrup and 60 bales of c*»tton. Mr. Harrell has gathered 100 bushels ol ground-peas for seed, sold $50 worth of watermelons, and will fatten 6,000 pounds of pork. Hr. Harre.l has had one plow on bis pjace, run by Alec. Simpson, that made 14 J bales of cot ton, 260 bushels of corn, 300 bushels of potatoes, besides gathering 50 bushels of ground-peas and fattening 1,000 pounds of pork. This we call a self-sustaining form, and this is the reputation that Mr. Harrell sustains in our county. We doubt if uny man in the several counties around makes more money farmiug than Mr. Har rell, and if nnv man will t(ike the pains to examine closely the list above mid note the diversity of his products, it will be seen at once that the secret of his success consists in raising everything be consumes at home. There may bo a few men in Terrell who can boast of raising more cotton to the mule than Mr. Harrell, but we exceedingly doubt if there is one who makes more mouey. Neatly Done. “I have been told,” sad Mr. Dubom, watching the great steam hammer in the rolling mill, "that a good banimer- nmu can break the crystal of a watch with a thirty ton hammer.” “Yes, sir,” said the hammerman, “It can bo done.” “J should like to see it,” said Mr. ' Dubois, eagerly feeling in his watch pocket. “I can do it, sir,” replied the man. “And will you?” replied Mr. Du bois, drawing out bis watch. “Come, I nm anxious to see it tried.” He laid hiB watch on the great an vil plate. The hammer rose to its full height, and the next instant all its ponderous weight, with acrashiug force that shook the ground for an aero around, came down on tho watch. “There, sir,” said the hammermnn, quietly, “If you don’t b.liovo that the crystal is broken, just stoop down and you can see it sticking to tho ham mer.” Mr. Dubois swallowed a wholo pro cession of lumps and gasps before tie could epcnk. “But I forgot to say,” ho exclaimed, “that it was to break tho crystal without injuring tho watch." “O, yes,” said tho hammerman; “yes, I know; I bnvo heard that rub bish myself, but it’s nil gammon. I don’t believe it can bo done. But you can bronk tho crystal overy’time.” —■*•••* Farmers aro perplexed how to plant next yonr, They sop jio money in cotton ai the low prico and guano so high, and tho prico of lubor increas ing. If they plant corn largely the prico will only bo somo fifty cents per bushel. Tbo high prico of meat, the low prico of cotton and the scarcity of labor renders tho outlook for next year gloomy. But our men high in office bonst of tho trcmeudobs pros perity of the people. Perhaps our sal vation is in truck farming. This-is a good point for watermelons, Irish po tatoes and tomatoes. .. Killed by Giant Powder, f Pobtland, Obeoon, Deo. 8.—An ex plosion occurred yesterday in the tun nel of tbe Oregon and California Rail road extension, twenty - miles fror Biddle, which killed four Chinamen, dangerously injured four others, and blew a number out of tbe tunnel. Af ter a blast bad been fired, tbe China men began drilling again, and struck a charge of giant powder which bad not exploded. Tbe hpad of one Chi- nninnn was blown off, and tbe legs of another were torn from bis body. Postmaster-General Howe, in bis annual report, recommends that a system of postal savings banks should be inaugurated. After careful study, he has arrived at tbe conclusion that tbe telegraph and , postal systems of tbe country should be inclnded under one management, and that the only protection for the public against mul tiplied extorsions is for tbe govern mont to assume exclusive control of the transmission of domestic sages. He considers - tbe telegraph “too terrible a power to be wielded by any other than the representatives of fhe whole people.” For the first time in thirty-one years the post office has not been a burden on the public treasury. After deducting nil extra expenses, there was a net surplus of receipts over expenses of $330,050, while list yenr there was a deficiency of $2,446,338. The estimated reve dug for the fiscal year 1883-4 is given at $50,670,456, and the estimated ex penses at $46,741,111, which will leave a a surplus revenue of $3,929, 345.
