The Board of Health acted wisely in recommending the suspen sion of the schools when they did. Tis said, “There's nothing in a name,” but, female reader, imagine yourself named Mrs. Aattersmasher, and your friend, Mr. Q. sends you the handsomest bonnet in town as a Christmas present, and the blockhead porter takes to the home of Mrs. Smatterbasher, and she, thinking it all right, splurges out in the. said bonnet before the mistake is discov ered. How would you feel on the name question ? A meeting of the Glynn County Ag ricultural Society will take place at 11 iA. m. on next .Wednesday at L’arioso Hall. It is earnestly hoped that a full meeting may be obtained, as business of importance should be transacted. Tb0 election of officers will lake place and the question should also be de cided as to the advisability of holding a fair iu 1883. It will be an interest ing and important meeting, aud ev ery member should be present. Christmas has come and gone, and whilst to many it has proven a bless ing, to others it bus been a day of sadness, owing to the way we spend the day. Instead of a day of thanks giving and praise for a Savior sent, we make it a day for drunkonness and crime. Our exchanges teem with murders and bloodshed by those steeped in liquor. Will we never, as a people, rise above this standard ?— Surely the American people need ref ormation. !■ Dart left this week, for city to lay the memoriul |>ia Legislature, asking np- | for Custom House eta Congress. The gw Vandalism. Fun is one thing and destruction of property quite another. We are pained to state that some persons en tirely forgot themselves one night during the Christmas holidays, and not contented to have a little fan, went beyond and mutilated property. Besides exchanging signs of business men (which might have produced a little merriment, provided there bad been any point in the jokes), they proceeded to ruirj others. For. in stance, the sign and store front of Messrs. Holzeudorf Bros, was just literally danbed np with green paint, and the elegant new sign of Messrs. Glover & Dunn, the handsomest and costliest in tbo city, was pierced by- three bullet-boles, each of which flaked off great splinters, thus terrioly defacing the sign. Such vandalism we deprecate, and here nsk the ques tion put to us, where were the police when all this mischief was going on ? We saw enough men with stare on during Christmas to have stopped nil pueb. ChriHtmiiH Tree* Our Baptist Sabbath School had their Christmas tree and Santa Claus on Wednesday night last at Hein’s Hall on Newcastle Blreet. The tree was handsomely decorated with pres ents, which made the eyes of the little folks sparkle with delight. After the opening exercises, these, to the amount of over $G0.00 worth, were distributed to the anxious pupils.— The evening passed off very pleasant ly, indeed, aud.may be scored as a success in every particular. The MHeqaerey Bail. ^ All maskers intending to attend tbe grand masquerade ball at L’arioso on the night of Monday, January 1st, are requested to enter the ball from tbe back door, rs Mr. L. G. Goldsmith, of the committee of invitatioo, will compell all parties to raise their masks before entering tbe dancing ball. All other parties will euter tbe front door. , Max A. Rice, Com. of Invitation. '-'eirved Right. Last Monday niq,bt, $»» - lot of boys vein enjoying a bonfire and fire works in front of the residence- of Hon. J. E. Dart, a young colored man came np and dared tbe boys to treat him as they had others,, by fir ing roman candles after him. This was mors than their young boy na tures could stand, so they lit their caudles and began firing on him. He immediately pulled out a pistol, cocked it, and pointing it in tbe di rection of the boys, was in the act of firing, when Mr. Dart reached tbe scene, and planted a blow with^his fist upon the fellow's ear that stretched him fall length upon tbe ground, and throwing bis pistol ten feet away. The boys, taking advantage of (he situation, just peppered him with their roman oundles. The grand ju ry will, do doubt, investigate the mat ter and inquire from whence came that little pistol. Halt Sheet Thin Week. We give this week only n homeo pathic dose of news. We do this to give “the boys” a little Christmas, and also to clear up the office of “pi” and other “dead matter,” preparato ry to another year's work. The Portuguese bark now loading at this point carries, as a sample, some fifty cypress ties from Satilla to Opor to, Spain. If they prove satisfactory, quite a long Portuguese railroad will use them in preference to other woods. Tho .festivities of Cbristuyis have, this season, been unusually pleasant and interesting. Tbe young people have enjoyed one round of pleasure after another. On Saturday night (Christmas eve) quite a rccheiche af fair was had at the residence of Capt. James Po&tell in honor of the anoL versnry of the birthday of Mr. James D. Gould. On Monday mprniDg at 11 o'clock old Santa Claus emptied a stocking large enough to fit “tbe old man of tho mouotuin” full of presents for tho children of tbe Union Church Sabbath School. Besides singing and other usual exercises, the occasion was enlivened by recitations and readings by both teachers and schol ars. At night, although tbo parents, friends and children went through a drenching storm, a large concourse assembled at the hair of tbe Mallon School to witness the exercises of thutyoung but prosperous institution. The performances were highly credit able to both teacher and children.— Tbrongb his agent, Santa Claus had fitted up, iu good taste, a Christmas tree laden with presents for tbe chil dren of the school, which nil enjoyed very much. After tbe exertises there were grand pyrotechnic displays at Retreat, the estate of Captain King, and tbe residences of Mrs. Gowen, Mrs. John McCullough and others, at St. Simons Mills, witnessed by quite aff assembly of frieDds. Since then dancing, ridiug, singing, recitations, hunting, lawn teunia, etc., have been tbe order of the day. As far as heard from", no preceding Christmas -for many years bus been so universally observed and enjoyed by our good people. There has been not an in stance of rowdyism during the whole week. The day was observed more in accordance of our views of a Christ mas day than any we ever before wit nessed. May we Save many happy returns of this occasion. FORSALE.
