X. Y. Tribune.
Two man stood nenr ft letter-box in
Broadway disputing about a sealed
letter which ono of them held in his
burn). The letter had been posted at
an office in Virginia and it carrier bad
delivered it at nn up-town address.
In the meantime the person to whom
the letter wai addressed fcad left tbe
the city. The original address bad
been erased arftl onu in a distant
town bad been written below it.
"You will bavo to put another
stamp on it,” said the stouter of two
men to the one who held tbo lotler.
“That’s possible, but wife told me-I
only needed to drop it into a box,
She ought to know about such things,
because she’re-tnnila lots of letters
that come to the house."
■“Why didn't-sbe look after this one
then ?”
“ltecanse she wanted it sent from
down town so that it would get out
quicker.’’ * ' ,
“Well, if yon post it without an
other stamp it will not go at a
Women don’t know about such
tl/inga."
A letter-currier approaebtd the box
at that moment and an appeal was
made to him. He glanced at the en
velopo and said: “That needs another
-stump because ft is not a city letter,
If it weru gnii-g to another part dt
»li■■ oily Ilia old stamp would carry it.'
rDo you mean to say that this let
ter would be demined at the office
for postage?",
“Well, perhaps they would send it
hml charge the extra postugo at the
eo l of tho line' Yon had better see
tin' station agent about it.”
“There,” said the stout man after
tin' carrier bad walked away, “yon
sec bow much your wife knew nbont
it..".’
"Come on to the station and if she
is wrong I will pay for two cigars.”
Tkfy went to Station A and the
letter was shown to the agent there.
“That’s nlf right," was his onrt com
ment.
“But a enrrier has told mo it would
need another stamp because it was
going out of tbo city ngaio.”
“The law nsed to be tbat way,” thy
agent said, “but has been changed,
and every carrier ought to know it.
Now a letter can remailed ns often ns
necessnry in the United States to get
to the owner without e.xtra postage.
The only limit is the number of
changes tbntcan be made in addressee
on the envelope.’'
Wliy He Didn’t Fall.
Last spring an Indiuna man started
n bank in n town in Dakota, and
about tbo 1st of February, having se
cured deposits to,the extent of $23,000
a notice was one morning posted on
tbo door of the bank reading:
“Temparurily closed—ho[m to pay
tho depositors in full.’ 1 • *
Tho banker wanted to test tho tem
per of the pnblio previous to a big
scoop. In tbo conrso of half an hour
the doors wero kicked in, the office
gutted, the banker stepped on until
he was seventeen feet long and only
two inches thick, and the chap who
held a revolver to bis car jovially re
marked :
“Now, then, my frieud, wo give you
just live minutes to unlock that safe
and connt oat the slugs to depositors
in fall.”
The banker quickly acquiesced, and
took tho next trniu fur the east in
search of more civil people.
A Horn Lady.
Ladies—real ladies—are never com
pelled to make a public announce
ment of the fact (hut they are ladies.
The woman iu the following incident
a'lowelby her s'sng, if in no other
wiy, that she had no claim to tbo ti
tle:
“You mast behave yuuise'f, mad
am," said a 'W’ostoi n judge to a wrath
ful witness.
“Well, mako him behave hisself,
then,” she replied, pointing toward a
young lawyer who was cross-examin
ing her in a manner that was really
very exasperating.
'‘Simply answer his questions,” said
the judge, looking severely at the at
torney. “If be is not a gentleman, it
docs not follow that you should not
be a lady.”
“Me a lady!” cried the irate wit
ness. “Me n lady! Lookee here,
judge, I was born a lady, and raised
a lady, and don’t you fergit it 1"

“Where nre yon going with the pop
pies, my little man," asked a gentle-
rnan of a small boy whom bo met with
threo pups in a basket.
“(Join’ to drown them,” was tbo re-
ply.
“I want a pup for my little boy to
play with. What do von say to let
ting me to take ono of theso?”
“I’ll sell you one,” spoke up the
boy, with American enterprise. I’ll
sell you this jailer ono for fifty cents,
the' black one for seventy-five cents,
and tbo Spotted ono is worth ouo
dollar of any man’s money.”
I think iny little boy would like
the spotted one best, but yon ask too
much for it. You lifid intended to
drown tiffin, bat I’ll give you twenty-
five cents and save you the trouble of
drowiog the spotted one.”
“Twenty-five cents for that spotted
purp!” exclaimed the hoy. “I can’t
stand it; taxes is high; rent is high.
It costs good money to get into tho
skating rink. Oh, no; I can’t take
less'tlmn $1.
“But yon intend to drown—”
“Take the black one at seventy-five
cents."
“.My little boy wouldn’t like the
black one.”
“Mako the yaller one half a dollar.
He's dirt cheap.”
“My little boy wouldn't like his
color.”
“Well, then, yon had better tell
your little boy to play with his toes,”
and ho continued toward tbo river.
“No party can deftdbent his way on
me these hard times.”

A Stubborn Case of Scrofula.
I have beeti affiicted with scrofula
from my infancy, and in consequence
have always been it frail nud delicate
creature. I might truthfully say that
whs raised chiefly on mercury and
potash. These remedies fur the time
being would drv’np the fearful ulcers
with which I suffered, but t.ney would
return with greater violence, I was
the merest shadow us to form and
person. My digestion whs all de-
uuged, and my existence was most
wretched. Everything that could bp
done for me was done, but no perma
nent benefit was derived. At last a
great tamer came on my neck below
tho left ear. It increased iu size un
til my head was forced to the right
shoulder, and in this ungainly aud un
comfortable position I was compelled
to carry my head. The doctors deoi
led that it was there to stay as long
it.' continued, and for many years
n do leu, mi. In March, 1881, at the
Htiggt souu of Col. John Traylor, I was
induced to try Swift’s Specific.. My
system responded to the medicine
promptly, and I began to improve
from nlmost the first bottle. Thilt
fearful tumor has all disappeared, and
every 'appearance of the disease has
left my person except a small hard
lump on the right side of my neck,
ami that is disappenring rapidly.—
From a fragile little girl I have de
veloped into as hearty and rohnsi
yonug lady ns there is in the neigh
borhood. Swift’s Specific is the only
remedy tbat has over given me any
permanent relief, and I am in better
health and weigh more than lever
did in my life before. My old friends
scarcely recognize me since this won
derful change has been wrought in
my appearance. My gratitude is un
bounded for wbat this medicine has
done lor roe. Miss Tohmip. Emurv.
