AN ORDINANCE.
To aasvsa and levy tnxt-a and raiae a
revenue for the city of Brunswick
for the yent 1885, and prescribe
penalties for a violation ol the same,
and for other purposes connected
with tbe taxes sod rereoue of said
city.
That. from am v ,
inhabitants of aaid city, and ail thorn who hold tax
able property within the city ol Brunswick, shell
pay towards the support of the government of aaid
city, and for the convenience. advantage, safety aud
benefit of said city, the laws hereinafter prescribed.
Sec, 3. Aud be it further ordained, Thai every
person, firm or corporation owning arty lands with*
iu raid city, whether tbe same be laid off into lots
or traete or parcels, shall pay at.x «»! <*ne aud one-
half per cent upon the value of such lots, tract* or
parcels of laud, ss assessed by and tinder the lith
aecth B of the charter of said city, exempt upon such
as may be exempt under the laws of the Mate.
8*0, 3. And he it further ordained. That e ery
person, firm or corporation owning any bdildihg or
otlur liu| rovetnent within said city shall pay a tax
of one and one-half per cent upou the vslue of such
buildings or improvtiuents as assessed under the
eutd twelfth section or said charter of the city, ex
cept such buildings and improvements as aro ex
empt under the laws of the Elite.
Sec. 4. And he tt further ordained. That every
person, firm or corporation owning household or
kitchen or office furniture, gooifs, wares aud mer
chandise, watches, clocks, jewelry, plate, musical
instruments, stocks in ally corporation, bohds.
notes and other evidences of debt, inouey, a*»lvyut
debts aud every other kind of porsonal property*
whatsoever, shall pay a tax of on# per cent upon the

on the Aral day of April, 1*85, except such as are
xetupt under the laws of the State.

ot real c|tato and improvements to bo taxed under
this ordinance shall be ascertained fronf the Aase--
sort for the year 1885, and that or peraoual property
by means of the returns hereinafter prescribed.

rotleved of such tax by laboring on the public
streets within theclly for *lx consecutive days, un-
dor the direction atid control of such peraon aa the

lect, at any time prior to the first day of August,
18*5. Atul provided further, That all persona liable
to such tax may make a return thereof with the re-
tnrua of real aud personal property, aud pay the
same with the quarterly or other peymeuts. •
Sec. 0, And bo It further ordained, That all per
sons railing or refusing to make their returns un
der the soveral sections of this ordinance shall be
■nbjoct, on conviction therefor before the police
court, to a tlno not exceeding ono hundred dollars,
or labor on the public works for a term not exceed
ing thirty days.
8kc. 10. And be it further ordains.1. That the
Clerk and Treasurer bo, and he Is hereby required
to issue executions against all persons for the en
tire amount of tax duo for tho year 1*85 upon the
failure to promptly pay tho first of other quarterly
payments as they become due.
Sec. 11. And be it further ordained, That one-liall
of one pur cent upon all taxable property within the
city be collected and appropriated .to the payment
of tho ordinary current expeustsof tho city, and
the remaining portion of tho taxes collected and ap
propriated to tbe extraordinary expenses of the city
to-wit: the payment of the principal and luterest
that may become duo during tho yoar 1883, nud ou
the bonds Issued for n compromise of the indebted
ness of the city, and the retting apart of the sinking
fund ot one thousand dollars tor tb&redemptlon of
the said compromise bonds, oducstlnnsl purposes,
improvemrnt of streets aud sidewall*, flro pur
poses, am. public, buildings.
hr.c. 13 And be it further ordained, That this or
dinance shall be subject to amendment Mini repeal,
in wh«‘le or iu part, at any time during the year 18*0
should it bu considered advisable to do so, and no
such amemlme-jt or repeal shall in any particular be
so construed or considered as to impair the right of
tho Mayor and Council to axscss and levy a tax for
the whole year 1883, whensoever made.
Ktc. 13. And be It l'urt -r . rdnieed, That all or
dinances and parts of ordinances iu conflict with
this ordinance ho aud tho same are hereby repealed.
