ST. SIMONS DEPARTMENT.
Da. R. J. MASSEY.
EDITOR.
This deponent is wreatliDg with
chills and fever.
No fleas in the spring; no June
bugs in the summer.
Rev. A..Q. P. Dodge, Jr., has re
turned from New York. *
St. Simons Mills are quite busy
sawing lumber to fill her many or
ders.
Capt. Ramey’s Sunday excursions
Vy Ocean View promise to be a suc
cess.
Mr. W. C. Taylor has led in caute-
tloupes this season—baviDg four hun
dred ripe atone time.
Both physicians on tho Island are
sick. The patients enjoyed a rest
spell, consequently ha»e improved.
Desperate contest between General
Green and the farmers—prospects fa
voring the General in attaining the
mastery.
Corn ripening, peas growing, pota
toes flourishing, oat yield above the
overage, and vegetation on the dou
ble-quick iu growth.
Juo. Currie has brought another
cargo of tine, fat beef cattle to feed ns
St. Simoner8 on. John does not in
tend to let us perish.
Mr. J. B. Wright and lady, Mr
Jno. C. Moore and lady, and Mrs. Df.
I Ulain, all of Brunswick, were the
guests of Mrs. W. H. Gowen.
The crop of figs all over the island
promises to be more abundant than
f for many years pft9t. Several orchards
will in all probability yield several
bushels per tree.
Cnfiee has a little diversion just
now. He has turned from the laby-
rinthiuu intricaces of the law and
gone to discussing the lusciousness of
the “wntermilyun.”
Mrs. W. R. Shadman, of Cannon’s
Point, was severely shocked by a
stroke of lightning last week. The
shock was temporary, however; she
recovered within a few hours.
If any person about engngiug iu
truck funning wishes to know the ad
vantages foreign markets ofiei over
v home, demand, he is respectfully re-
* fetred to Mr. W. C. Taylor,-of Frod-
eVica, Capt. M. P. King, of Retreat,
and our lum.me self.
^ Prof. Kidpath, author of the His
tory of the United Stutes, says that
Gen. Oglethorpe built a fortification
in 173C, at the mouth of St. Simons
river, and called it Frederica. As it
is forty miles on a straight lino from
one point to the other, is not his
statement forty miles from the truth ?
Thu most important movement for
the advancement of our beautiful
isle since the establishment of the
great mill interests of Messrs. Dodge,
Meigs A Co., is now under consider
ation by a company of capitalists, at
the head of which is Hon. J. M.
Coup<-r, formerly of St. Simons. It
is to establish on Long Island bench
^ a sea side resort in graud proportions
with all modern appliances and ap
purtenances requisite to make Long
Island one of the most favorite re
sorts on the Americnu continent.
For beauty, regularity, symmetry and
smoothness Long Island hns a bench
uot to be surpassed anywhere. It
will be. remembered that Long Is
land is a small island directly on tho
Atlantic just eust of the northern end
of St. Simons. At present, b4 means
of marshes, creeks uud rivers it is;
difficult of access from the cast and j
.breakers from the Atlantic side. The
most commanding hotel site on Long)
i-lmnl is about six miles from St.;
Simons Mills dock. To obviate this
difficulty there will be iu Ibis connec
tion a steel raihvny from the dock to
the hotel. This will pass over the :
^ marshes on trestle, the rivers to be
spanned by bridges. Two engines
and cars, six miles of rails and the
necessary timber have already be. n
^ procured for the road ready to be
placed. By another season we hope [
to be able to announce that this grand
enterprise will have been so fur com-j
pleted that her people will bo ready |
to invito one thousand guests to be 1
present at the grand inaugural of the
finest seaside honse in America. This
is n grand boom-for St Simons, and
so far as we can nscortniu is duly op-
preciated by her citizens.
910,000 IN a. waste-basket.
Washington, July 21.-*-A package
containing fiye ‘’certificates of trans
fer,” each of the denomination of $10,-
000, sent from the office of the Regis
ter of the Trensnry lust night to that
of tho Comptroller of the Currency,
was inadvertently left in the office of,
the Deputy Comptroller on the top of
the safe. The package was found by
the ehorewowan and carried to. the
Lieutenant of the Watch. The Dep
uty Comptroller was sent f .r, and he
went *o the Treasury at on. e. Upon
examining the package <Ji ly four of
the certificates were found enclosed,
and a senrch was instituted, resulting
at the end of half an hour in finding
the missing certificate e.um.g the
waste papers, and much crumpled up.
The certificates bavo something of the
appearance of government bonds, and
oue of the theories advanced is that
some one undertook to steal one of
them, and finding it worthless, or
that he or she was likely to bo search
ed before leaving tho building, hastily
threw it away. Some inconvenience
would have resultad from the loss ot
the paper, but the government would
havj lust nothing of value, nor would
the assumed thief have been n gainer.
The Comptroller will investigate the
matter as thoroughly as possible.

Yesterday a uegro man was found
by tile yard-keeper of the East Ten

when found was glad of uu opportu
nity to breathe the fresh air again.
He was turned over to oflicer Hardie

his cause eloquently this morning to

Washington, July 22.—The Presi
dent and members of the Cabinet
show great interest in the condition
of General Grant. They have all
made arrangements to get the bulle
tins issued obout him as they come
in. The President bad purposed stop
ping to see General Grant on his way
to the Adirondacks. He will do so
if the Geueral is still alive. Wnen
Gen. Grant dies the White House and
executive departments will probably
be put in mourning, uud will be closed
on the day or his funeral., A South
ern Senator, now in town, will offer
next winter in the Senate a bill giv
ing Mrs. Grant a pension of $5,000 a
year for life. This is the pension
usually granted to the widows of
Presidents, and the bill will in all
probability puss.
