Local Matters.
I . To Fernandlna.
' On Tuesday. morning a party of
fourteen embarked on the Inca for an
excnrsion to Fernandina, as tbe guests
of that genial and whole-aonled young
gentleman, Hr. Will Smith. At nine
o'clock tbe Inoa was loosed from her
moorings, nod tbe run to St. Andrews
l^tmd made in quick time. From tbe
J sound tbe steamer’s prow was turned
seawunl, and for the sea-buoy we
^beaded, tbe “gude ship” riding tbe
waves to tbe music of laughter and
jest, And tbe inspiring notes of "John
Brown’s Body." But buoyant spir
its are not always a sure prevent
tive egainst old Neptune's mal
ady, Some of tbe ladies seemed to
grow less blithe and gay, and when
this deponent attempted to softly
steal away from the festive party, they
even chnrged on him that he was sea
sick. He did rot stop to deny it, and
neither does he now. Tbe remainder
of the passage was barren of joys to
him, and only when be felt the firm
dock At Fernandina beneath bis feet
was “Richard himself again.”
, At tbe Struibmbrn the party were
dined, followed by a drive on tbe
beech, in the midst of which a shower
came up, compelling ns to hastily re-
f trace our steps. But the shower
dampened not the spirits of the party,
and a surf-bath was next in order, at
the conclusion of which we hurriedly
■ turned our faces homeward, for fear
that the treacherous tide of Jekyl
creek would force 41s to prolong oar
trip to an uncomfortable length. But
this bug-bear was passed with ease,
and we reached Brunswick at ten p.
in., tired hut hnppy.
We voice tbe sentiments of the en
tire party when we return to Mr.
Smith their thanks for bis kindness
and unstinted generosity. Nothing
did be leave loosing that could con
tribute to the enjoyment of the day.
Ioe cream, watermelons, and other
delicacies were dispensed with a lav
ish band, and be wearied not in bis
* self-imposed task pi ■ seeing that no
* one lacked for anything. The excur
sionists were unanimous in declaring
him au ideal host, and this excursion
tbe most pleasant ever known in the
lives of tbe participants.
To Capt. Tupper and Engineer Gor
too, too, are due tbo thanks of all for
their many acts of thoughtfulness and
kindness, while in onr memories Mrs.
Tapper will ever live as a lady who
delights to make others happy.
Quarantine Matters.
Dr. J. S. BlHin and Mayor A. J.
Crovatt attended this week a meeting
in Savannah called by the health offi
cer and Mayor of that city, to adopt
uniform rules of quarantine for all
tbe places along the Georgia coast.
It wus agreed that at a future meet
ing to be held, each of the cities of
Savannah, Darien, Brunswick nod St.
Marys, should send up a set of quar
antine rules adapted to its individual
needs. From these fonr papers the
consolidated board will form ir fifth-
one that will tin tar tbe entire field and
adopt it as the quarantine rules for
the entire const of Georgia. We are
glad to see this concert of action, as
it will do much to allay this feeling
of an rest, so common in coast towns*
lest “some other place may not be ms
strict as we.”
The following resolutions weie
adopted:
Resolved, That the Senators ami
Representatives in the General As
sembly of (feorui-i representing
Brunswick, Darien and Savannah, be
requested to dratt and present to tbe
Geueral Assembly a mil o amend sec
tion 1389 of tbo code of Georgia, in
reference to fees of tbe tmurdiug offi-j
cer, so ns to permit tbe mnoicipal an- -
thorilies of the above mentioned cit- j
ies to eHtablisb such quarantine;
charges hs, in their judgment, may lie
deemed just and proper.
Unsolved, That they Iff also request-
ed to have ibe jurisdiction of the city
of Brunswick, in regard to tbe quar
antine, extended so ns to include the
Satilla river mid the entrance of the
quested to severally prepare quaran
tine regulations to bo submitted to
the next convention, from which gen
eral and uniform regulations for all of
said ports may be compiled.
Resolved, That tbe city of St. Marys
be invited to take part in the neit
convention, and that said convention
be held at Savannah in December
next, tbe day to fixed by His Honor,
tbe Mayor of Savannah.

Below we give an extract from a
letter of W. B. Hill, of Macon, to the
Atlanta Constitution. We think the
hit at tbe “Brunswick and Jesnp
tramway"—as we call it down this
way— is snperb:
Bunklev, Cumberland Island, Ga ,
July 24.—At fifteen minutes to eight
the train stopped in the Buperbs of
Brunswick, under the “gospeling
glooms of the live oaks," sung b,v
Sidney Lanier. The energetio drum
mers jumped off and began walking
towarJs the city of great futures.
“What on earth ore yon waiting
for ?" was tbe inquiry of severnl pas
sengers, addressed to the loafing train
hands who were resting outside.
“Waiting on time,” was the reply.
It was even so; the train was due
at Brunswick at 8 11. m., and after
stopping at on% bouse for buttermilk
and another for eggs, it was neces
sary to wait a quarter of an hour with
out pretence of reason. ‘The branch
road from Jesup toBrunswick is war
ranted to ride you longer for tbe
same amount of money than any road
m tbe Union.
Atlanta, with her keen instinct for
what is both good and cheap, is just
beginning to make “find" of Cumber
land island. For tbe first year since
this became a resort, n majority of
the visitors have hailed from your
city. The ocean for ton dollars a
week 1 This is indeed a land of royal
privileges for common people. Few
Georgians are too poor to enjoy, at
least for a season, an elegance nt your
grent hotel equal to that of a regal
palace; and here the breezes of heaven
nnd the waves of ocean will labor for
the delight of the visitor, almost at
dead head rates.
A CHANCE FOR A FORTUNE,
I rejoice that Atlanta has turned
her attention hitherwards. It may
result in her enterprise and money
taking bold of tbe splendid possibili
ties of the island and developing them
into tbe most popular resort sontb of
Cape May. Nature has started tbe
subscription towards this object with
all that could be expected of her re
sources. Spreading trees, with bound
less centiqnity of shade; mountain
heaps, piled up high with glistening
sand, “tbe snow of summer sens;”
the widest, longest, firmest nnd most
gradually sloping beach in the world
(as travelled people declare); these
represent a large contribution of
stock in the enterprise. “Tbe soil
needs only to be tickled with a hoe to
laugh with n harvest” of fruits and
vegetables of every variety. An in
vestment of $10,000, with judicious
advertisirig, would make this “plant”
fairly tropical with coupons nnd divi
dends.
