a Smoke a» U to, Had.
“For twenty-flve cents eacb," said
tbs proprietor of one of the largest
and most fashionable cigar stands on
upper Broadway, “you can buy as
good a cigar as one wants to smoke
The difference in flavor between that
and one that costs $1 is too slight to
be noticed almost. You can’t mako a
great many young men believe that,
though. I need to have a wealthy
young customer, who quarrelled with
me once because I didn’t keep a cigar
that sold for more than fifty cents.
“I told him I would keep some for
his especial benefit. After be bad
gone I took fifty of the twenty-five
cents cigars, wrapped them carefully
in tin foil, and put them an old box
with a tag stating they cost one dol
lar each."
“The next day be be came in, and
asked me if I bad filled bis order.
“I told him that at great personal
inconvenience I bad done so, and
then I banded him oat due of the
dollar brand.
“He took five, and never could be
induced to smoke any others.
“ ‘They cost a great den),’ he used
to say, ‘but the flavor is so fine they
are more than worth it.’ ”
"I want o medium strong cigar,”
si.id an old gentleman who now en'
tered the store."
“Yes, sir,” responded the cigar
•nun us be banded out a number of
small cigars. The old gentloman
laid down a quarter on the counter
and took six cigars.
“That’s isn't the kind of a man
who pays a dollar for twenty-five
cents cigars,” we said.
“No," answered the dealer. “He
leaves that sort of folly for bis son.

On the husband, ns being tbe high

will not be attained by selfish re

Detroit Free Tim,
Jones was well aware tbat bis wife
was in tbe habit of rifling bia pockets
when he was asleep, bat, like a wise
man, be kept silent on the subject.
One night, however, be awoke and
cangbt her In tbe act.
“Ha 1” he exolaimed, "wbat are you
doing, my dear?”
Tbe lady started, her cheeks flash
ed, tbe pantaloons dropped from her
grasp, and she was about to make a
full confession, when a bright idea
entered her bead. Recovering ber
composure she said:
'I was. looking to see whether your
pntalooDS needed any buttons.”
‘They do, they do, my dear!” be ex
claimed, springing from bed, “needed
'em for weeks, months, and I wonder
ed wby you didn't sew ’em on; bat I
waited, for I was sure you would get
to it to sometime. And bow kind
of you to get out of bed at this hour
of night to attend to ’em. Say what
you will, there's nothing in the world
like a good wife. Let me turn up tbe
gns a little, bo’s you will have all tbe
light you want in sewing ’em on. Got
yuur needle and thread and tbe but
tons? No? Well, tell where they are
nnd I’ll get them for yon ?”
Mrs. Jones proceeded to sew on tbe
buttons, while ber husband sat on tbe
side of tbe bed nnd encouraged ber
with words of praise for ber wifely
care and thought for bis comfort, oc
casionally remarking that go where
he would be would always say there
was nothing in tbe world liko a good
wife.
Then be went to tbe wardrobe and
brongbt out several pairs of trousers,
a coat, two or three old vests, and a
number of shirts, from all of wbicb
buttons were missing, nnd cheerily
observed:
While we are at it we'll make a
night of it.
Two hours later, when Mrs. Jones,
with n weary sigh, removed tbe thim
ble from ber finger, Mr. Jones patted
ber cheek, nud said:
I say it again, my dear, that
wherever I go I will make it known,
proclaim it from the housetops, shoot
it in tbo highways and byways, that a
wife who gets up iu the middle of tbe
night to sew buttons on ber husband’s
clotbe8is priceless treasure, a crown
to that husband and an ornament to
ber sex.”
Then Mr. Jones, chuckling to him
self, lay calmly down and slept the
sleep of the just.
Judge (todarky witness)—“Do you
know tbe nature of an oath ?”
Witness—'“Sah?”
"Do you understand wbat you are

“Yes, sab. I’m to swear to tell tbe

“And wbat will happen if you do
not tell tbe truth?”
“I 'spects our side will win de case,

Tbe way to get tbe better of a bil

nine is to take tbe juice of one, two or
three lemons, as appetite craves, in as
mnch wafer ns manes it pleasant to
drink without sugar, before goiDg to
bed. Iu tbe morning, on rising, at
least half an hour before breakfast,
take tbe jnice of one lemon in a gob
let of water. This will clear the sys'
tem of bnmor and bile with efficacy,
without any of tbe weakening effects
of calomel. People should not irri

produces inflammation after a while,

not burn tbe thront, it does its medi

tbe stomach is clear of food, bas
