Rev. A. G. P. Dodge bos returned
from Augusta.
^lews items nre few and far between
on the island this week.
Messrs. Wright & Gowen have re
ceived part of their fall stock.
Mrs. John Carrie is stopping at the
Mansion House, Milledgeville, Ga.
The genial face of Capt.Wm. Smith,
of the schooner Wm. Hays, is once
again seen in our midst.
Mr. R. P. Laehicotte, of Waverly
Mills, S. G., is spending a few days
with his nephew, Capt. H. R. Symons.
The Long Island hotel and railroad
is still the talk. Eligible hot*) sites
in demand, new industries, sih-Ij as
tobacco growing, fruit canning, etc.,
in near prospect, surely St. Simons
will have a boom.
It is s aid that “musio bath charms
to soothe the savnge,” etc. If a band
of the wildest Apnche or Sionx Indi
ans could listen one evening to the
colored church bells 'on the island
they would be soothed to snch an ex
tent that scalp-lifting would be a
thing of the past.
Private uartios here are receiving
letters from Northern farmers, men
of capital, who know how to stir the
soil. Their object is to seek n warm
er climate, where they oan have the
whole year to do farm work in, in
stead of a few months.
A deftly executed drawing of n
huge club, under which is a notice
warning the St. Simons editor of the
Advebtjseb and Appeal to beware,
(4iorns the portals of Messrs. Wright
&, Gowen’s store. We learn that the
sliillfnl artist «ho produced it wns
Mr. B. Phillip-. '>•>« of the New York
li should Le seen to be ap
preciated.
At Ocean View we don’t boast of
W fme cottages, have no fuss and feath
ers or other extras, but tbero is real
peace and comfort of mind, the very
best of surf-batbing, health, ease and
plcasuro such as to challenge any oth
er seaside home. Water warm and
the air balmy, bathers, when they
como out of the surf, nre cot forced
to hurriedly seek protection from the
cold air, as nt points further North.
The bracing winds of the east, with
the soft, wooinR winds of the south
east, so temper the surroundings that
a a surf bath on St. Simons beach, at
W)cenn Niew, is one of the luxuries of
the age.
We notice an article in the "groat
and good” Herald, by Caplin Hotcb
and Engineer Broxton, severely criti
cizing our item concerning the steam
er Hamilton. Unless we we.e incor
rectly informed, the steamer Hamilton
was raised from where she sunk and
beached near the basin gate before
we penned the paragraph in question.
Engineer Broxton now says ebe can
tie repaired for fonr hundred dollars.
When we take into consideration that
it was a steamer and not a bateau
that wan to be repaired, we think that
Mr. B.’s figures fully corroborate oar
statement that “she could be repaired
at a moderate cost.'* So far as stick
ing to the truth where personal mat-
i |ters are concerned, we were not aware
then or now that we were dealing in
personalities. Nothing personal was
said or implied. So far as Captain
4Moteh or Engineer Broxton are con
cerned, the writer knows that they
would leave nothing undone to save
the eie imer. Had it not been tor
tin-ir tireless endeavors to raise her,
she would soon have become a total
wreck.
