Council BlufT. Nonpareil.
There is a young ronn in this city,
a good-looking yonng fellow, who
bns a sweetheart out iu the country a
fow wiles, and be spends two even
ings each week in her society. A few
nights ago be stayed to tbe usual
hour, and as be passed out the front
door be discovered tbnt it was cloudy
aud dark. He did not relish tbe idea
of driving alone through tbe gloomy
night-, and hiuted about a good deal
to get an invitation to remain, but it
was not forthcoming. But tbe young
man whs equal to the emergency.
Going down the steps be artfully con
trived to slip and full gently to tbe
ground. Thereupon lie sot up a tre-
menduous groaning. Tbe ruse work
ed admirably. The girl sareamed,
tbe men folks jumped out out of bed
und carried the ytnng man tenderly
into tbe bouse. His horse was put
np, and be was assisted to undress
aud desposited in tbe spare chamber.
He bad hardly beguu to chuckle over
tbe success when tbe girl’s mother
put in appearauce, armed with a
mustard plaster about a foot square
und teu-borse drawing power. This
sbe immediately proceeded to clap on
tbe small of tbe young man’s back
where bo incautiously located tbe
damage to bis frame. For two
hours that woman Bat by tbe bed, and
was not satisfied till sbe beheld with
her own eyes a blister an inch deep,
and resembling a dozen or more
ant bills.

Au exchange lays down these rules
for" tW'lJWpfiiDBsa * of married per
sons:
If borne trials were never told to
neighbors.
If they made up nfter every quar
rel.
If household expenses were propor
tioned to receipts.
If they tried to be agreeable, ns in
courtship days.
If each one would try to be a sup
port and comfort to tbe other.
If each remembered that tbe other
was a human being, not an angel.
If women were as kind to their
husbands as they are to their lovers.
If fuel end provisions were luid in
during tbe high tide of summer.
If parties remembered that they
were married for worse us well as for
better.
If men were »s thoughtful of tbeir
wives us they were of their sweet
hearts.
If wives and husbands would take
some pleasure ns they go along and
not degenerate into mere toilsome
machines. Recreation is necessary to
beep the heart in place and to get
aloug without is a big mistake.

SHORT POINTS.
Atlanta Constitution: Tbe wings of
a party do not necessarily make it
angelic.
Atlanta Capitol: The beat of dis
cussion often cooks tbe debater’s
goose.
Atlant Capitol: Tbe Jersey cow is
fast losting her character at tbe bands
of the milkman and tbe pump.
Atlanta Capitol: Before Legislators
abuse newspaper men, they bad bet
ter lay in a supply of sbeet-iron
brenst-plates.
Waterloo Observer: A bar is a
place where water is scarce and dan
ger near. ,
Albany News: There is no agricul
tural folly as pitable as a farmer’s
druwiog bis rations in town.
Life is like a game of pokerr—tbe
man with nothing but 10 bigb aud
plenty of assurance rakes down tbe
pile.
Detroit Freo Press: A Nevada
court held that a man wbo has $5 in
bis pocket and bis board paidfor a
week abend is “a capitalist” within
tbe meaning of tbe law.
Tidbits: “Can I see the Mayor?”
inquired a member of tbe City Coun
cil of the former’s servant. “Not at
present; be’e at dinner. “But my
business is very important.” I can’t
help it, sir; bis honor is at steak.”
Iu sixteen of tbe States there is do
provisions of tbe law prescribing tbe
form and size of tbe ballot. In Flor
ida aud Louisiana tbe prescription
seems to be that tbe ballots’ninst be
printed on white paper. In North
Carolina and Oregon tbe paper must
be white and without device. In Ne
vada nothing is said aboat tbe color
of tbe paper, bat tbe presefijbed size
is four By ten inoEes.-'TnBJiiibfBit
is provided that there shall be a
blank space below each name. This
requirement seems to be distateful, as
it is often observed’ only in the most
formal way. Iu Minnesota tbo bal
lots iu cities must be of white paper
and of equal size. Iu South Carolina
tbe ticket mdBt be white and without
device, aud two nod one-balf iuebes
iu dimensions. . In Vermout tir- law
prescribes only tbe form of tbe words
in which the ballots shall be printed.
Iu Rhode Island the ballots are. fur
nished by tbe secretary of State in
self-sealing envelopes of uniform size.
Of a'l tbe modes, this is suid to be
tbe best for tbe prevention of frauds.
Many have attempted to scale Co
topaxi, the loftiest of active volcanoes,
bnt tbe walls are so steep aLd the snow
so deep that assent is impossible even
with scaling ladders. On tbe sontb
side of Cotopaxi is a great rock, more
than 2,000 feet bigb, called ”Iuca’s
Head.” Tradition says that it was
once tbe summit of a voleauoe, and
fell on tbe day when Atabsnllpn was
strangled by the Spaniards. Those
who have seen Vesnvioue can judge
of the grandeur of Cotopaxi if they
can imagiue a volcano 15,000 feet
higher shooting forth its fire from a
great crert covered by 3,000 feet of
snow, witli a voice that has been
heard GOO miles.

A DIFFICULT PROBLE.H.
Mrs. Blank is a rather young wo
man with rather an aged husband.
He is a scientist wbo spends most of
time in obtuse speculation, although
the neighbors say he is compelled to
do most of the housework. This
view of tbe case was recently
strengthened by what a lady visitor
saw. Tbo wife of tbe scientist was
at homo and greeted the visitor cor
dially, wbo responded:
“How do you dot I am glad to
see you looking so well. How is
your husband ?”
"He is quite well,” replied tbe wife
of the scientist. “He is in bis studio
engaged in solving some difficult-
mathematical problems.”
Juat ut this moment the voice of
the scientist was beard from kitchen
at the end of the house:
“I’ve got through grinding coffee.
What shall I do next ?”
Put Till* In Your Pipe.
Au English Workingman, just past
the middle age, found that bis pipe,
wbieh for many years bad beea a
great comfort to bim, was beginning
to seriously affect bis nerves. Before
giving if up, however, be determined
to find ont if there was no way wbieh
be might coutinue to smoke witbont
teeliog its effects to injurious extent.
He accordingly wrote to a medical
journal, and was recommended to fill
tbe bowl of tbe pipe one-tbird fall of
table .salt, and press tbe tobacco
bard down upon it, as in ordinary
smoking. Tbe result was very satis
factory. Daring tbe process of smok
ing tbe salt solidifies, while remain
ing porous, aud when tbe'hardened
lump is removed at the end of tbe
day’s smoking, it is found to have
absorbed so much of tbe oil of to
bacco as to be deeply colored. Tbe
salt should be renewed daily.
Narrow Eacapo of a Tramp.
A borrid looking tramp appeared
at tbe front gate of a Dallas, Texas,
mansion. The gentleman of tbe
bouse told bis negro servant to
go and orJer tbe tramp away. Tbe
servaut did so, and quite an alterca
tion ensued. Tbe tramp finally went
off, and tbe colored menial returned
to tbo bouse, which was some dis
tance from tbe gate, ebakiug bis
bead, and talking to bimself iu a
very excited manner.
"That tramp gave you some impu
dence, didn't he ?” asked tbe gentle
man.
“He did, boss. He called me de
wuBsest kind of names, aud I bad a
half mind to knock him down and
stomp bim. Wby, boss, be need sicb
bad language dat I thought it was
you talking ter me.”
Natur* a* a Prohibitionist.
The Atlanta Constitution says:
“For eight moutbsiu (hs year whisky
drinking is too ruiuous to |be in-
dnlgml in by tbe Southerner. It is
not possible for a man to drink as
much whiskey at the Sonlb as tbe
North. If be attempts it be will go
under. In point of fact, there was
never as much drnnkeness in this
soc’iioa ns iu me Northern Slates.
Even iu tbe days when the use of li-
quor was general intemperance was
the exception. Down this' way all tbe
forces of nature are arrayed on tbe
side of intemperance.
A little child returned borne tbe
oiber day tvitb a rooster in a wicker*
basket. He was overheard at tbe
station remarking to a companion:
“If this rooster doesn’t bavecbfck-

IfllPnOVINGON HIS WIFE’S WAD.
-Fromtba Dnff.llo Courier.
There is iu this city a young Bene
dict who is so unfortunate ns to be
wedded to a lady of rare beanty and
attractiveness. Now, this young
Benedict bad in all respects proved u
model husband and bad acquitted
h’mself so faithfully on all occasions
tbnt bis wife bad confidence bim, nnd
willingly entrusted bim tbe most sn
ored duties to bis charge. So fu'ly
indeed, did sbe trust bim that on
Wednesday last sbe started for tbe
country to have a week’s visit with a
friend, and tbe last words to bim be
fore starting—having consigned tbe
baby to tbe tender mercies of the
uurse—were: “George, promise rao
to take care of Fido. Don’t let bim
overeat bimself, and, above all, bathe
bim regularly. You’ll find tbe bntb
tub in tbe parlor, tbe towels are iu
tbe linen press, and bis comb and
brushes nro in tbe left band corner
of my bnrean drawer, and the co-
longe is on tbe shelf above. And be
sure when you’ve finished to wrap
bim in bis blanket and put hjm iu
the sansbine to dry, and if be catches
oold telegraph me." So saying she
printed one last impassioned kiss on
Fido’s nose, ebook bands with her
husband, tearfully delivered Fido to
bis keeping, stepped into tbe carriage
and was gone. On Thnrsdav nnd
Friday Georgia implicitly carried
oat tbe instructions of bis ubsent
wife. He bathed Fido, colonged
Fido, brasbed, combed and dried
Fido. Bat yesterday morning when
tbe scribe passed tbeir residence be
beard wild yelping nnd ki-yings pro
ceeding from tbe yard. Stepping up
to tbo fence be loosed over and saw
an unusually fat png, now turning
somersaults in tbe air, and frantically
yelping tbe while. Seme few yards
off stood Georgia with bis bauds'in
bis pockets and a smile of sweet con
tentment on bis face. He was bath
ing Fido. He bad chained bim to a
post and tnrned tbe hose on him.
A Pretty Wedding Custom.
In tbe Bermuda islands there is a
pretty custom of taking up a very
young cedar tree, wrapping tbe roots
in paper nnd setting it iu tbe center of
the wedding cake. Tbe tree is after
wards planted near tbe dwelling of
the newly married, and keeps tbe
memory of tbe happy day ever green
Tbe cake is made in three tiers, the
lowest of wbiob is simply frosted; tbe
second, which is smaller, is covered
with silver leaf, while the top-moat
one, which is only large enough to
bold tbe carefully protected roots of
tbe little cedar, bus a coating or gold
leaf. Only tbe lower cakes are cat
and eaten.
Tbe Augusta CjiroiuVIe thinks that
“tbe Legislature I* u-own.g restive

We hope that it is growing prudent ns
well as restive.
Mrs. Brown—“Yes; poor John died
