ST. SIMONS DEPARTMENT
DR. U. J. MASSEY. Editob.
The schooner Nellie Pickering fin
ished loading on Monday last. She
sails for Philadelphia.
Mr. Dodge’s house has changed its
outward appearance, by being newly
painted. The work does credit to the
painter, Mr. Geo. Stevens.
Mr. Dodge baptized three per
sons at service last Sunday. Through
Mr. Dodge's labors his church here is
rajjidly gaining in membership.
We understand that Mr. B. A.
White has accepted the position of
Purser on the steamer Cracker Boy.
We wish him success in his new cu-
j pacity.
Mr. Willie Postell, to float his wag
on across a creek, turned it bottom
upwards. The reverse motion of the
wheels loosened the nuts, and the re
sult was that be lost one of the wheels.
Mr.. D. G. Huys, postmaster at the
Mills, left last Wednesday for a trip
of a month through the North and
West. We hope that he will enjoy
■ his jaunt, and return with improved'
health.
A colored fisherman picked up m ar
tbj lower mill, last week, two glass oil
cans, two cedar backets, aud a metal
oath tub. These articles doubtless
belong to the same cargo as tbose
picked up by the pilot boats outside.
I Residents on the eastern shore ot
the island have picked up several
thousand feet of lumber lately on the
beach. The recent cyclone that pass
ed from the West Indies northeast to
Cape Hatteras must have dealt severe
ly with vessels at Bea, ulthough it
providentially spared oyr const.
We are glad to learn that Dr. R. J.
Massey's health has improved very
much bjy his six weeks’ sojourn in
upper Georgia. He says he feels so
much better (ban when he left here,
' aud but for having been closely con
fined in the sick room day aud uight,
attending his son, he would be real
stroug. His son, R. A. Massey, whilst
I presiding in Douglas county, was at
tacked by hemorrhage of the lungs.
The Doctor says that is certainly the
place for tic lo v country man.

stitution itself or of the purpose yon
have in view. There is uot a line in
the Constitution to prevent it. It is
true the General Assembly is pro
hibited from making unv donation to
any person, corporation or associa
tion, but as I understand you the
farmers do not want a donation from
the State of any kind, but merely
want the Legislature to authorize or
direct the agaicultural bureau to make
exhibit for the State, in the name of
the State, and that every dollar ex
pended will be under the supervision
of the officers of the State, and the
exhibit when collected will belong to
the State. The Agricultural Depart
ment is one of the regularly organ
ized institutions of the Stale, and un
der the Constitution of tue General
Assembly has the same light to au
thorize it to make nu exhibit in Lon
don that it has to m. utilize it to
rouko an exhibit in Atlaid In short,
it is Constitutional to levy taxes for
the support of the Agricultural De
partment, and it unquestionably is, it
is also Constitutional to authorize it
to mane exhibits of the natural re
sources of the State ut such plnces
and under such restrictions ns the
General Assembly may deem to the
best interests of tba people. It is
merely conferring additional powers
upon an institution already constitu
tionally in existence—a question of
policy and not of law.
I wish you runeb such success in
your undertaking, and if you carry
out of your plans successfully, I am
uro the people will have much to
thank you for. I am, my dear sir,
very truly yours, [signed]

Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 12,1885.
My Dear dir: I am very much
obliged to you for the copy of the
resolutions of the State Agricultural
Society ia regard to the American
Exhibition in London next year.
They are strong ’but not n bit too
strong. It would be a great thing
for the State if she would make a
thorough exhibit in Loudon of her
wonderful resources. Every indus
try ought to feel the effects of it, but
Hie farmers especially would be, I
think, materially benefitted. They
need cheap money, and no people in
the world ure more disposed to real
esiale us a security than tbe English
and the Scotch. While Georgia is,
perhaps, as well if not better known
than auy of the Southern States, tbe
people abroad have no conception of
Imr natural and undeveloped wealth;
in fuel, it is not going too far to any
that very few persons ut home realize
it. The impetus such an exhibition
as you advocate, properly made,
.kuuld give to tbe introduction of for
eign capital and to the development
oi our State is beyond calculation.
The objection you mention ns urged
by sumo that tbe State cannot make
.iu exhibit of her resources in London
is untenable and must arise from a
inter presentation either of the Uou-
