Boston, Oct. 20.—About 8 o’clock
this morning a gang of 20 trackmen
on the Massachusetts Central railroad
were being conveyed to their work
by an eugine and a flat car. The
men were silting on the sides of tbe
car with 10 on each aide. When nenr
Oikdulc, without a second's warning,
all tbe men on one side were swept
off in some way, at present unknown,
but probably by a falling tree or tele
graph pole. Nine were either killed
or injured.

The itinerant eye doctor of India
performs operations iu a manner that
would startle a western oeuliNt. Ah
be enters a town he bawls: "Do yon
want back your sight ?—one rupee
only." When a customer appears be
takes out his penknife and performs
tho operation wb'le standing in ihe
Open square. Then lie binds up tbe
wound, tcH his patient to keep in tbe
dark for a fornight and pockets hia
rnpee. A writer in Chamber's Jour
nal, wbo describes this proceeding,
says that it is almost always success
ful; one of bis own servants, a woman
of 80, was in tbis way successfully op
erated upon for catnrnct.
Yesterday Ordinary Calhoun got
far eoougb along with bis local op
tion petition to see that there were
considerably more than enough names
to authorize tbe election. He found
470 qualified voters’ names before be
bad gone a third through tbe list, and
that by an examination of tbe tax
books was the qualified voters of the
county. He therefore ordered the
election for Wednesday, November
25th.
Tbe registration to date has been
1,3C7, almost a third of whom are
colored. Seven hundred and eighty
five are in the south Atlanta office,
and 582 in Dorth Atlanta.—Constitu
tion. ■
Fulton county—or, in fact, Atlanta,
—with her usual expeditions wny of
doing everything, is tbe first to have
an election UDder the lato local law.
Bat jast at tbis Btage of the proceed
ings a very serious question presents
itself over tbe ninth section of the lo
cal option bill Tbe occasion of this
is the possibility noder tbe law that
the districts may not have a right to
vote in the approaching election, and
that Atlaota will alone have tbe right
to pass on tbe matter. Tbe situation
tins: West End has prohibition by
special enactment in her charter.
East Point has prohibition by a vote
of the people. A country church in
one of the districts has prohibition by
a special law for that neighborhood.
All the districts of tbe county have
prohibition by an action of tbe coun
ty commissioners, wbo have pnt on a
prohibitory license fee of $2,500—just
live times the city license. Thus it
will been seen that practical prohibi
tion already prevails everywhere in
tbe county, except iu the city of At
lanta. In tbe face of that comes tbe
ninth section of the local option bill
which roads as follows
“Section 9. Be it further enacted
That no elections shall be held under
the provision of tbis act for any conn
ty, city, town, or nny other place in
Stute, where by law the sale of spirit
uons liquors is already prohibited
either by high license, local option
<>r other legislation, so long as iliese
local laws remain in force; provided
that election shall lie held under the
provisions uf this act, where an elec
tiou has been hold under auy local
act, until two years shall have
pired from the date ijf said election
under said local act, where tbe result
was "for tile sale.”

THE SOUTH'S TENDER.
Constitution.
"It was but a few years ago when
the best piue lauds on the line of tbe
Macon nod Brunswick and tbe Cen
tral roads conld be bought at fifty
cents per acre. Now it is very hard
mutter get any kind of timber
lands nearer than three miles from
these lines, and such ns can be got
ten sells at very high figures. To get
any kind of good l.ud now necessi
tates going a long ways from the rail
road and bnilding yonr own tracks.
When tbe Georgia Pacific was first
built there were some eighty sawmills
along the road. Now there are only
fifteen. There is yet, however, an al
most inexhaustible supply of good
timber iu the State, but it is off from
the railroad, and to develop the new
sections new railroads will have to be
buili.
It is only a question of time when
tbe West will make great shipments
of timber from tbe South. Timber
land which but a few years ago sold
at merely nomiual figures in Michi
gan now bring two thousand dollars
an acre. Of course tbis mcaus that it
is growing scarce that the Sontli will
be called upon to supply tbe demand
of tbe North.
Georgia pine is already as generally
used for flooring in New York ss
stone paving for the streets, and the
demand still increases. The Brook
lyn bridge is floored with it, and bu 1
a few days ago, tbe Genesta swapped
her broil-n Norwegian bowsprit fur
one of Georgia pine, and with it is
probaoly now tossing iu tbe waves of
the ocean on its homewuril trip, or
toying with the Ionisers winch lash it
to its channel dock, which will in
time be remodeled and renewed with
one of Georgia pine.

Portsmouth, Eng., Oct. 28.—Tbe
Genesta, which was defeated in the
recent international yacht race for tbo
Americu'e cap by tbe American yacht
Puritan in New York harbor, arrived
at ibis port at 9 o’clock this morning
after a voyago across the Atlantic.
She came into port flying the three
first prize flags won in her contests
with American yachts. Great enthu
siasm was manifested by tbe crowds
ou board tho men-of-war and yachts
in the harbor, asd cheer after cheer
greeted her as she sailed into port.
It is believed that the ti ne of the
Genestu’s trip across the Atlanta—2(1

yacht record.
