A UB9UUK1BLB MAN.
m
0,
Oirlugi villa (Ky) Pit pitch.
About four miles east of this place
there resides a man who is indeed a
prodigy. The name of this wonder
fnl man is Reuben Fields, and ha
has but one developed faculty, this
one seeming to take entire possession
of him, driving all other thoughts
from his mind. In early infanoy he
was apparently much ns other chil
dren, but in extreme youth he devel
oped a wonderful precocity, or rath
er a supernatural endowment for
njatbemntics, even then solving diffi
cult problems with apparent ease and
with but littlo study. This became a
mania with him, and grew as he
grew, to the exclusion of all other
branches of thought, uutil finally
without knowing a single figure or
letter of the alphabet, he became the
perfect master of the science of math
ematics. He has been tested by the
most scientific men of this profession,
and the answers to tbe most difficult
problems that they have keen able to
proponnd aro at bis finger's end, the
invariably correct ablution being giv-
cu in. an instant, qnioker than
thought. As instance of his remark
able powers, he has been known to
keep n,ore than a dozen clerks busy
in taking invoice of a stock of goods.
I Indeed, his knowledge and applica
tion of the science of mathematics far
exceed anything that the most scien
tific men are aide to comprehend.
(Another phenomenal characteristic
of this man is that he can tell the
time, to a second, either day or night
Awakened from the soundest sleep,
he can tell yon, without hesitation,
precisely what time it is. What
' Blind Tom is to music, Reuben Fields
is to mathematics; and, like that il-
Instiiuus idiot, this one branch ab-
sorba bis entire mental capacity.
Another peculiarity of Fields is ut
ter fearlessness of snakes. In bis
childhood be manifested a fondness
for those reptiles and made them bis
playthings, and, ^strange to say, be
was never bitten, though ho bandied
with greatest carelessness and freedom
JP the most poisonous species. He is
very superstitions, and believes bis
extraordinary powers .tirect gifts from
bis Creatni; nod says that were be
| to reveal the s. rots or use them for
lue purpose of ginning more than tbe
necessities of life, be wonld expect to
be deprived of them immediately.
He lias nioielliiin once refused offers
of handsome salaries. His parents
died some years ago, since which
time Fields has been roving around
among his kindred, staying with each
a greater or less length of time, ac
cording to the nenrness of kinship.
He is very fond of pluyiug check
ers, and it i« said that he 1ms never
yat met Ids match at this game. He
is annoyed a great deal by people
who are curious to see his extraordi
nary power? exhibited, and he says
that this is his greatest trouble, for,
whether he will or not, when a prob
lorn is presented the solution fs bound
to flash through his mind.
If AIK OMOWINO AFTEII DEATH.
Two years William A. Walters was
buried in tbe atone Chapel cemetery,
in Woodcock vnlley, Huntingdon
county, Pa. The other dsy tbe body
was exhumed, to be taken by the
friends of tbe deceased to Williams
port for reinterment. When the cof
fin was reached by the diggers they
'discovered that it had sprung ut the
joints, uu<l out of tbe crevices the
sknll protruded iu all directions. On
opening tbe casket tbe hair on the
head was found to measure 18 inches,
tlid whiskers 8 inches, and the growth
on ibn breast G inebee, notwithstand
ing t lie body bad been cleanly shaved
when prepared for bnrinl. A similar
instance occurred in 1882 »t the Cass-
ville cemetery, near Williamsport.
Upon exhuming the remains of Jit-
«s,b OesB*ille, the skeleton, which
lia-l been buried for ten years, Inid
tin r-,ii it 10 or 12 inches in length
firm ns deling life.
