'this week, and his good wife did not
forget to send tbe editor a sample of
tbe first day’s boiling. New Georgia
syrnp just from tbe pot, is a rich del
icacy, andv by tbe way, it may not be
amiss just hereto mention that new
syrnp put up in bottjes and tightly
sealed, will keep fresh and nice fur
months, and always tastes as if just
boiled, and consequently brings
higher price.

Statistics show that the cotton re'
ceipts of Norfolk for tbe past year has
fallen off 10,000 bales, while that of
Savannah has increased that amount.
These two facts will naturally con
nect themselves together and lead to
tbe conclusion that 10,000 bales of
E. T. V. & G. R. R. cotton Las gone
to Savannah, instead of Norfolk. This
is legitimately Brunswick’s cottoD
and every bale of it should have come
tbroegh our port.

Now that winter is again Ou us and
L’urioso Hnll opened for amusement,
we would suggest to tbe management
that tbe experience of the past show
pretty conclusively tbe importance of
beating up the hall. With an open
door behind tbe audience and the
door nnder tbe stage frequently open,
a current of cold air is felt that bodes
no good to ladies in ball costume.
On occasions when the ball is packed
with a full audience, the need of fire
is not felt, but on occasions like last
Tuesday night it is. We throw out
these seggestions trusting the evil will
be remedied.

We learn from Father Shea that

pied by Mr. Joe Wallace as an anction
house, next door to F.Warnke, tailor,
on tbe 17th inst., and will remain

teresting leutures of the occasion will
be the test of popularity between two
railroad men in town. A gold beaded
cane will bo given to the one receiv
ing tbe highest Dumber of votes. The
funds urising from the fair will be
used in finishing the Catholic church.

Tbe prize drill took place on Tnes
day night, according to appointment.
A very small bouse greeted tbe boys,
though it by no means bad tbe effect
to dispirit the boys. The first rising
of the.curtain discovered tbe company
drawn np in a half circle on tbe stage,
with tbe officers, and Lientenants
Brooks and Morell, of Savannah, tbe
judges, occupying tbe centre. This
ourtain was bnt of a moment’s dura'
tion, and tbe curtain went down to
rise again on tbe company alone.
Lieutentant Kay appearsd, and put
the boys through tbe manual for sev
oral moments, by way of getting them
warmed to thrir work and then the
judges took ‘their positions, and the
prize drill begua in earnest. One by
one tbe boys fell out of line, but the
line was closed np, and the work
went on with unabated zeal. Lients.
Kay, Morris, and Schlatter took turns
in executive position.
At last but four men stood on the
floor, Messrs. McCanly, Barkuloo,
Symons and Mason, and the interest
become intense. For several minutes
it seemed that “Greek had met
Greek,” and that dodo wonld fall, bnt
at last Sergeant Mason lost tbe pres
tige that he so long has held, and
went down and ont. Private Symons
was tbe next to fall, and Barkuloo
and McCauly were left to continue
the bloodless but excitiDg contest.
With perfect precision they executed
every order, until by eotne luckless
error Barkuloo fell, and McCauly was
left victorious. The audience ap
plauded with gennine enthusiasm,
Messrs. McCauly, Barkuloo and
Symons were called to the front, and
the prizes awarded by Lieutenant
Brooks. Tbe prizes consisted of the
plume, a pair of epauletts, and a box
of cigars. Lieutenant Brooks com
plimented the boys very highly ou
their proficiency in the manual, and
wished for tbe company a long and
prosperous career. His concluding
remarks were direoted to the ladies,
aud especially tbe young ladies, urg
ing upon them tbe duty that imposed
upon them of helping to build up the
company. He called upon them to
sustain tbe organization in every way,
aDd to look with favor upon no young
msn wbo could hut would not be
come a member. This policy he
thought would soon swell the roll, and
we quite agree with him.
Next in order came the “eilent
drill,” in which ten men go through
sixty-four movements of the mnnnal
without a word of command. This
was also repeated with every man
blindfolded. Of course odo or two
mistakes were made, but these were
not to be wondered at in the least,
and if anyone thinss they orb, we be
lieve they can convince themselves
by an attempt to gain tbe same profi
ciency manifested by those who par
ticipated.
At the conclusion of the drill, the
floor was cleared for the daocers.
Wraps and other encumbrances were
quickly laid aside aud the 6coue was
quickly converted iuto that of a ball
room where Terpsichore, and, we
have no doubt, Cupid as well, held
high carnival for several hours.
Anotlier Story.
Dr. Bnrford is putting on a second
story to his tabby building. Tbe new
port will be of brick. Mr. H. B.
Tre.tdwell is tloing the work, and a
good job he is making of it. He in
forms us that he will make the upper
story twelve feet between floor and
ceiling, thus insuring, with tl.e aid of
a generous supply of viodotvs, a cool
and airy apnrtraeat. We learn that
the upper story will he occupied by
tbe Brunswick Riflemen as au armory.
