ST. SIMONS DEPARTMENT.
Da ii. i. KAaszr. echos.
Mr. Wnrren A. Faller has returned
to tbe Island.
The members of the two siek fam
ilies at the lower mill have all con
valesced.
Ciipt. Postell is expecting parties
to commence soon on the Seaside
Honso on East Beach.
Miss Mary Gould assumed tbe da
ties of teacher of Mallon school uu
der fair nuspices Inst Tuesday.
%iipt. Greene, grandson of General
Nathaniel Greene, whose memory
every Georgian reveis, gave the Is
land a pop call on lust Saturday.
We congratulate onr friend and
neighbor, Capti M. P. King, upou his
appointment to tbe very important
post of Deputy Collector of Customs
of Brunswick.
The well-known face of Captain
Smith, of schoouer William Hays, put
in sppearaace last week. Everybody
knows Captain S. He is with us so
often be is almost regarded as one of
tbe mill family.
,Onr worthy Postmaster, D. G,
Hays, has returns from his summer
tour much improved. He go. a to
work at once, relieves his deputy
♦rho Ims done good service during
Postmaster Hay’s absence.
We were presented by Mr. J. L.
Peckhaiu of St. Simons lighthouse,
with u couple of sweet potatoes of u
new variety. They were certainly tbe
most delicious we have met with for
many a day. Tbauks.
In port are brig Orelia loading for
Operto, Portogal; schooner William
Hays, for Hoboken, N. Y.; bark Nora,
for Liverpool; schooner William R,
Drury and Lena R Story, for Bostou.
Brig Rizelle Smith, for South Amer
ica.
.Since writing tbe above, tbe Story
has left. She wos rather delayed at
the moment as she pulled out into
tbe river. Her crew deserted, but
tbe Captain found no difficulty in
|fepiacitig them with nnotber from
Brunswick.
Arrivals nod departures of tbe
steamer Ruby are as follows:
I.Vrrive at St. > 8:30 a. m.
Leaves Si. Sin .ms 9:00 a. ill
.ioTivce at iiruiiHwiaU 10:30 a. m.
Leave Uruuswick 2:00 p. in
^ Arrives at St. Simons 3:30 p. m.
Loaves St. Pinions 4:00 p.m.
Arrives at Brunswick 5:30 p. rn
The mail leaves St. Simons on 9
a. in. boat and arrives on 3:30 p. in
boat.
Mis. Puck bam, assistant iigbthoiise
keoper, bus shown us a silk quilt put
together by her mother, a lady most
soventy years of age. This quijt con
sists of 1,500 pieces, and is only one
of six she has stitched together
within the past twelve months and
presented to her children and grand
^children. For ono of her age this is
certainly a vnst deal of work. This
putting together of nine sr tun thou
sand pieces in oue year necessitates
an average of some thirty pieces each
► work day, with about 500 stitches to
each piece.
The rattlers have not all hibernated
yet, Last Sunday about 5 p. m. as
the negro church at South Eud dis
missed, a part of the congregation
passed through a field as a near cut
home. The leader of the gang being
about twelve feet in advance, was seen
suddenly to bump himself and spring
into the air, at the same timo'the fa
miliar whir-r-r, made known to his
companions that Adam bad encoun
tered a rattlesnake. The snake was
at mice killed with no other damnge
save the grandest display of the
1 1whites of eyes and ivory teeth that
was ever seen among a scared set of
. darkies. The snake had fifteen rut-
llis, was fourteen inches in circum-
'lereiiee, and seven feet ten inches
from lip to tip.
|) iring the nbsencu of Captain
Harney last week, fitting up tbe
steamer Egmont in good trim fos the
Altumuha river route, Capt. Keeno
managed steamer Roby. Daring tbe
heavy weather to and for, two things
were patent to every passenger.—
First, Cupt. Keene was master of tbe
position. Again, that tbe Ruby
evidently a seaworthy craft. Although,
she has Constantly plied on tbe St.
Simons route I *1* years without
much repairs, she shows herself
staunch and safe beyond all doubt.
She is destined we hope to make her
accustomed tripe doubly daily for at
least a couple of decades to come.
Is Dot Douglas tbe banner couDty ?
Again wo call to account the fine look
ing old gentleman on the other side
of this paper on a matter of history
He. says that “Fulton—or, in fact,
Atlanta—-with her UBunl expeditious
way of doing everything is the first
county to have an election under the
late option law." May ve mit correct
him by stating that little Douglas-
one of tbe youngest cqunties in Gcor
gin, if not theverg youngest—had her
petitions out, signed and ready for
Ordinary Cooper’a inspection by the
time Governor McDaniel had ap
proved tbe local option bill ? The re
sult is, Douglas bnB already had her
election on tbe 28th ultimo, “gone
dry,” and come out from darkness
into light, according totbedArb.and
light spots on the temperance map.
“Honor to whom honor,” etc., old
gent, yon know.
Another move in the right direc
tion has recently been made by our
neighbor Mi. John Fitzgerald, who
inclosed last Monday a check to W.
W. Thompson, proprietor of LeO «te
Nurseries, Smitbville, Git., for 400
LeConte pear trees. Mr. F. designs
setting out 8 acres of his valuable
lauds near tbe beach with this delic
ious and valaable fruit. With an or
dinary yield and at fair prices, with
tbe treatment he will give them, in
five years from this time he will, in
all probability, realize from $2,000 to
$4,000 per acre. With this sort of
inducement before us, why should any
one want a gold miue, steam saw
mill, or even a Florida orange grove ?
This is certrinly a wise step in Mr. F.,
and of the placeB to get pear trees
true to name and well grown, and to
meet with fair dealing, Mr. F. whs
fortunate in going to Mr. Thompson,
of Smithville.
Still another—not it hunters' yarn,
either—but afact vouched for by some
of the best men on St. Simons. Lust
week we stated that three line .Iter
bud been killed. This week we give
this buck story: Messrs. Jim and
Horace Gould and their ncigbuor,
Mr. W. C. Taylor, were out bunting,
and the dogs opened on wbat seemed
to be a rather cold trail nearest to
Jim’s stand. He followed on closely
as possible, and when he carao u|> to
tile dogs they found that they had
caught a large four-pronged t uck,
and were bolding it down on tin-
ground. Running up, lie soon die
patched the buck by cutting his
throat. This is h fact. With it is
connected a tale and pair of horns,
In this wav, at first the hunter was
at great loss to divine tbe cause of his
dogs so easily overtaking and hold
ing so fleet nud pugnacious au ani
mal as the deer is generally found to
be. But when attempting to turn
over the curcnBS the mystery was nt
once solved. With a full head of
horns running through tbe thicket of
vines, the buck bad becomo entangled
therein. When be found what was
the matter, before unloosing the horns,
Mr. Gould blew bis own born to call
tbe hunters to witness tbe strange oc
currence, fearing that bis statement
hereafter, not confirmed by others,
might bo subjected to the mild
criticism of apparent indulgence
iu the hyperbolical fuutansy of po
etic license, with which sometimes
hunters are rather suspected of UBing
to embellish their camp scenes. We
tmve given tbe tale and the horns.
For the moral, we respectfully ref, i
onr readers to ACsop'e Fables. As
grown up men and women do not
read we want to see lirtw many
boys and girls within tbe n-xt two
weeks cun give the moral reler. ed to.
Dou’t all speak nt once.
