Fears bare been entertained for
many past that the shops of the
B. & W. Rail n ay would be removed
to Wayeroas or some other point <>n
the, line where sufficient grounds
conld bo secured. We are pleased to
state tbit Council—as will bo seen by
their proceedings published elsewhere
in these columns—has secured the
necessary grounds aud presented
same to the railroad,' and that their
offer ims been accepted. This clinches
the matter, and we understand ar
rBngemcnts are b'ing made to iin-
prove the property thus acquired.
The site selected and pnrebrsed is
that tract lying along the B. & W.
Railway track from the neighborhood
of Dexter's wharf nearly to McCul
lough’s wharf, 1800 feet long by 3G0
wide, lying on the east side of the
track. The city pays $5,000 for the
property in ten yearly instalments of
$500 each.
This valuable property is leased to
the B. & Y1. Railway for 99 years,
subject to the following conditions in
substnneo, viz.: That tho property
shall be used by tho railroad for
shops, round-house, yards, otc., and
in the evont it ceased to bo thus used,
tbo entire property reverts to tho
city. Of all the wise things done by
the present Council, we consider this
one of tho wisest, as it secures to ns ns
a city a never-failing sonree of rev
enue, for shops mean workmen, and
workmen must be paid, and money
will thus be circulated here, which
would not wore the shops located else
where.
All honor to the present Mayor and
Council for this stroke of policy.

The Operas.
The Bijou Opera Company tilled
their engagement for Dec. 1st and 2d,
presenting Gilbert and Sullivan’s new
opera, “The Mikado,” and “Tbe Mas
cot." Tbe first iiained opera is a bur
lesque on Japanese customs, and
was more tbau enjoyable. Ko Ko, ns
tbe executioner, was more than im
mense, nud tbe Mikado himself was
by no moans a poor character, which
can also be said of the official with
many titles. Tbe ladies are also good,
which can especially be said of Miss
Randall as Yam-Yam. The music of
the opera is bright nud pleasing, and
was well rendered. Severul of the
company have exceptionally good
voices.
“Tho Mascot,” ns presented ou
Wednesday night, was a burlesque on
the original opera, and was as louglm-
ble ns could be wished. Much of the
music of tbo original has been left out,
though many pretty selections are re
tained. As on tbe first night, Mr.
Tbos. Martin wus the “huge" charac
ter, nnd Prince LoreDzo never spoko
but to call forth roars of laughter.—
Miss Randall, ns “tbe mascot,” was
mneb liked. The “Gobble, Gobble”
daet between herself and Pippo was
encored. A serious drawback to tbe
success of tbe performance was the
assuming of male characters by fe
males. This, however, did not pre
vent the performance from being
mbcb enjoyed.

Wo call attention to the now adver

who are just receiving their usual im
mense stock of holiday goods. Their
already well-filled establishment will
bo taxed to the utmost to contain the

on exhibition. The proprietors claim
to have coming and in store the larg

Owners of Pianos and Organs are
frequently imposed upon by tramp
