A. R. which was to have been held at t \lrs G. H. Aubrey’s on Tuesday afternoon was postponed on account of the death of As. Laura Graham, but on Wednes da} afternoon, the 23d, at fgur o’clock the chapter will meet with Mrs. Aubrey. Mrs, Mary Cleghorn Hills, of Rome, who attended the National Con vention of D. A. R. held in Washington C ity in April, will be present and give a report of the convention. All the members are urged to be present. CHEROKEE CLUB NOTES. The club again scored a success on last Thursday evening when the musi cal benefit was given by Jocal talent at the opera house. Miss Guili Montfort was a close second with sll^o. ■ * * * Mrs. Hill Jolly has been appointed chairman from the club to ascertain how many civil service positions in the county are open to women, and of these, what number are at present oc cupied by women. Civic Improvement. The meeting of several members <4 the club, headed by Mrs. Whitaker, chairman ot civic Improvement, at the colored Baptist church recently was helpful in every way. The meeting was presided over by the president of the Mothers’ Club of the Baptist church, and talks were made by several col ored women which showed a clear un derstanding of the need for iheir co operation in the present food crisis and better sanitation for Cartersville in order to avoid a season of sickness. A dub for school boys called “Off the Street” club with home gardens and picking up cans and trash as its object was the timely subject discuss ed by Prof. Williams, principal of the colored public schools. Rev. Thompson thanked thp ladies for their presence and promised to use all his strength and influence to help in the campaign for a cleaner town, cleaner lionfes, and more home gardens. Those who attended from the club were: Mrs. Whitaker, Mrs. Daves, Mrs. Jolly, Mrs. Peeples, Mr&. Renfroe. Garden Plot Secured for Soldiers at Etowah Camp. Mrs. Jack J. Hill was appointed tut secure a ploGof ground for the use of the soldiers at Camp Etowah, Sergeant Venable having made the request through the president of the club. Mr. T. W. Tinsley has come to the help of Uncle Sam’s boys with a true spirit of patriotism, and h,as consented to donate the use of a plot of ground as near the camp as possible to be used as a garden. This will be of untold benefit to the soldiers at the camp and Mr. Tinsley’s assistance is greatly appreciated. * * —tr NOTICE. AS such ag large number of club members are planning to go to Rome on next Tuesday to attend the Seventh District Federation, the program for Library Day will nqt be given. This is always one of the interesting days of the club year a,nd the date and pro gram will be announced later. * * * RED CROSS WORK. The first step toward local Red C ross Work was taken at the regular meeting of the Cherokee Club last week, with Mrs. W. \Y. Daves as chair man. Since then over thirty names have been enrolled as and requests for information about classes and membership are received daily. A permanent chapter will probably be formed in a very short time. MUSICALE. On Wednesday afternoon Miss Flor ence Milner entertained her friends and the public at her home at a musi eale. Her pupils in Calhoun, Atlanta and Cartersville took part on the pro gram. ‘At the conclusion of the musi cale punch was served the visitors in the living room by Mrs. Madison Milam. The pupils taking part were: Misses Milda fiarbin, Clair House, Barbara Henry,, Minnie Allen, of Calhoun, Mis ses Estelle Barrett, Inez Barrett, Kath leen Hines, Gladys Corbitt, of Atlan ta, and Misses Marihill Jolly, Joe Sproull, Charlotte Flemister, Evelyn Garwood, Mabel McCauley, Mrs. Lind say Forrester and Charles Vaughan, of Cartersville. Assisting in the piano ac companiments were Mrs. Sam Cand ler, Miss Ruth Thompson and Miss Florine Armistead. The out of town guests were: Judge and Mrs. Harbin, of Calhoun, Mrs. W. L. Hines, of Calhoun, Mrs. M. H. Thompson, of Newnan, Mrs. Chester Odgen, of Roanoke, Va., Mrs. Charles Cannon, of Stilesboro, and Miss Min nie King, of Adairsville. Capt. J. J. Calhoun, Mrs. Lila C. Morgan, Mr. Joseph S. Calhoun, and Master Calhoun Dobbins attended the marriage of Miss Belle VanDevander in Cedartown Tuesday morning. The bride is the granddaughter of Capt. Calhoun and has been a frequent and popular guest in Cartersville where her many friends are- cordially inter ested in the announcement of her marriage. Mr. Billy Crouch returned this week from college at Davidson, N. C. Mrs. Howell, of Greensboro, was the. guest recently of Dr. and Mrs. Sam M. Howell. Mrs. A. O. Granger returned this week. from a visit of several months tr. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Granger in South America. Mrs. Granger’s many friends will regret to learn that she is not at all well and "will be confined to her room for the present. Miss Mary Roberts left for Savan nah last week to he present at the wedding of her cousin, Miss Nell Hicks, to Mr. Samuel Floyd Thore, at which she will be an attendant. •Mrs. Clark Griffin and Mrs. Felton Jones have returned from Rome where they were extenisvely entertained as the guests of Mrs. Hugh Best. .Mrs. Horace W.
