Plant the following seed during the month of June: Beans, (bush), beaus, (Him), beans, (cornfield), beets, collard*, corn, egg plant, okra, peas, (field), pepper, po tatoes, (sweet), tomatoes, (North Georgia), watermelon, (for late crop). Some garden crops have been a failure on account of the cold, unfav orable weather. Some of these crops may be replanted, such as beets, beans, egg plant and tomatoes. A good sup ply of okra and tomatoes ’should be grown for canning later in the season. Some of the early garden crops, like English peas, lettuce, radißh, etc., may be replaced with corn, tomatoes, eollards, etc. For fungous diseases like blight, rust, mildew, etc., use Bordeaux mix ture. (See Spray Calendar). Arsenate of lead should be included in this to kill the eating insects. Remove and destroy all rotting fruit and all plants that are badly diseased. ORCHARD NOTES FOR JUNE. PEACHES. The last summer spra>> ing of peaches is made in June on varieties ripening the last of June and i:' Julyu The varieties ripening be fore the last of June should not be sprayed in June, or a better way to govern the last spraying is by the statement that the last summer spraying should be made four weeks before fruit is due to ripen. On peach es use self-boiled lime sulphur (8-8-50) alone, according to the formula given ir the Spray Calendar. During the month sow the orchard to cowpeas so as to supply nitrogen and humus; aud to cause the trees to ripen the year’s growth in the fall. On sandy soils use no other varieties than the Iron and Brabham, both of which are resistant to the nematodes (root knot). Early 1 i the month mound the trunks of the trees with soil, to a depth of 6 to 8 inches. This compels the moths to lay their eggs high and the resulting peach tree borers will be easily dug out in the fall. APPLES. Wherever the trees have set a heavy crop, thin to one in a cluster or so as not. to have two fruits closer than three inches. For tlie spraying of apples see Spray Calen dar and follow schedule. On varieties that are susceptible to bitter rot, Bordeaux mixture should bp substi tuted for the lime sulphur iu the spraying which comes nearest the •irst of July and in all subsequent sprayings. The lime sulphur does not seem to be very effective against the bitter rot and apple blotch. It is good practice to cultivate clean until about the first of July and then sow to peas. Cut out blight, disinfecting the prun ing tools with formalin. Arsenate of lead should be used in the June spray as a protection against the second biood of codling moth. BUDDING. Toward the last of the month pecan trees which have been cut back for that purpose can be bud ded. The pecan is budded by the use of an annular or patch bud. A good bulletin on this subject has been is sued by the North Carolina Depart ment of Agrifculture, Raleigh, N. C. Peaches are also budded during this month by shield budding. When bud ded at this time it is called "June Budding” and the trees are usually ready to transplant during winter and spring. This is a very simple process, and with a little practice anyone can become a peach budder. Athens, Ga., June 9, 1917. County Agent: From this time on throughout the rest of the year more or less sickness is found in the ordinary f&tm flock, due mainly to a few diseases which can be treated successfully by the treatments given below. At the present time very little is known about the treatment of poultry diseases except in a few specific qjg. eases which have been thoroughly in vestigated by some of the experiment stations. The single fowl in the average flock is not valuable enough to warrant any individaul treatment and should there fore be killed, even though success may be assuerd. The cured bird will never become a profitable producer ! after a serious sickness and should ; not be used In the breeding pen. The aim of every poultry keeper ! therefore should be to keep hts plant j and -manage his birds so as to prevent ! or reduce to a minimum the disease ; in his flock. | All dead birds should be burned; if j not possible, should be buried very deep. The factors that make sanitary poultry farms are: Clean houses, clean Pao TQ>y —'E.Twc car::f:v:u.- * j'JNS zi, ir,7. -- >', .* an ards, afcd clean birds. In case of trouble, you should first .-ee that the following requirements to health have been fulfilled: 1. Use hatching eggs from well matured, vigorous stock. 2. Thoroughly clean and disinfect incubators and brooders. 3. Guard against heating, chilling or getting little chicks wet. 4. Supply green feed and sour milk at all times. 5. Provide free range and plenty of shade. 6. Clean and disinfect houses often. 7. See that winter quarters are clean, dry, airy, and free from drafts. 8. Feed a balanced ration. 9. Exterminate lice and mites. Some of the commonest diseases that we have and their treatments are: Roup, chicken pox, sore head, colds, cholera, and scaly leg. LICE, FLEES, TICKS. Apply mer curial ointment and vaseline (equal parts) just below the vent, using piece the size of a kernel of corn. Part the feathers and get the ointment down on the skin. For chicks use ordipary lard, rub bing a little on the head, inside the wings and under the vent. MITES. Clean the hen house, roosts and nest thoroughly, and spray well | with a solution of 1 part (crude) Car bolic acid and 3 parts of kerosene oil. COLDS. JJse potassium perman ganate in the drinking water. Use enough to turn the water a medium purple color. ROUP. When head is badly swollen, wash with a solution of powered borax, 1 ounce to a quart of water and l*>wder head with iodoform while wet. In case there are solid tumors they should be opened, cheesy matter re moved and surrounding membrane washed with a good disinfectant. SORE HEAD OR CHICKEN POX. Remove crust or nodules and apply ereolin (2 per cent solution) qr per manganate, dust with iodoform, greese head daily with lard. Feed Calcium Sulphade in a mash at the rate of I teaspoonful per 10 birds. FOWL CHOLERA. Kill all badly in fected birds. Use ereolin in drinking water for all infected birds. Disinfect all houses and runs. When outbreak Is over, market the flock. Clean thor- Mighly yards and • house and start with new stock the following spring or fall. The following diseases may be treated successfully by removing the diseased birds: Rheumatism, limber peck, leg weakness, and bowel trou ble r, - . tIJ jL “ This department is only too willing to help at any time that you may have trouble with disease, either by a per sonal visit to your county or by cor respondence. Yours very truly, W. H. ALLEN, Field Agent in Poultry Husbandry. Dr. Frederic Jocobson says, 75% of women need Phosphates to give Strong, Healthy, rounded figure and to avoid Nervous break down. Thousands of women grow strong in Nature’s way. “Consider the Lilies of the Field, How They Grow.” The life of the lily Is but a few weeks or months. The life of man is ‘ithree score years and ten.” But to live one’s life in its fullness, women like the lily, must be nourished by those same vital elements which na-. ture provides for nourishing every liv ing thing; and these include the valu able phosphate so often lacking in the usual food we eat today. Argo-Phos phate is rich in these wonderful ele ments. It contains them in concen trated tablet form which is easy to take and quickly assimilated and ab sorbed into the system, and from youth to oM age, builds and rebuilds body and brain in beautiful harmony with Nature’s perfect plan. “That’s why” Argo-Pbosphate makes good solid flesh and muscles. SPECIAL NOTICE: Argo-Phosphate contains the Natural phosphates which thousands of physicians are prescrib ing daily to build up thin, pale, color less women to give them rosy cheeks, red lips, and a beautiful complexion. Many cases have been reported where women have increased their weight from 15 to 25 pounds with a few weeks' treatment, and any woman who de sires a well rounded and developed form, should secure from her druggist, this new drug which is inexpensive and is dispensed by any reliable drug gist with or without a doctor’s pre scription. If your druggist will not sup ply you, send SI.OO to the Argo Labora tories, 10 Forsyth St., Atlanta. Ga., and they will send you a two weeks' treatment by return mail.—(advt.) TRAIN SCHEDULE. Drug Cos. —(advt.) WHY THE CORN BELT „ IS COMING HERE. The State Department of Agricul ture, through the survey of its Mar ket Bureau, working preparatory to safeguarding farm products of food stuffs the next years, or during the “war shortage,” is convinced that the corn belt ultimately is coming to the heart of the old cotton belt —largely to the state of Georgia. Already it-is clearly evident that “war conditions” and demands are fast bringing the country to the period of very large, substitution of corn-bread for wheat flour. Here are some interesting .and Important figures, illustrative of what may be expected—much of which has already come: Reserve stock of American wheat May, 1916, 45,000,000 bushels. Reserve stock American wheat end of May, 1917, 18,000,000 bushels. Reserve stock in sight on August 31, 1917, none. Winter wheat crop, 1916, 418,000,- 000 bushels. Winter wheat crop, 1917, (estimat ed) 350,000,000 bushels. Total wheat supply of this country July 1, 1917, . under same date one year ago, (estimated) 135,000,000 bushels. Winter wheat crop, 1915, was 673,- 000,000 bushels. Spring wheat crop, 1915, was 352,- 000,000 bushels. Total crop, 1915, 1,025,000,000 bush els. Exported in 1916 from surplus of two years, 243,000,000 bushels. Total crop U. S. winter and spring this year will be (estimated) 640,000,- 000 bushels. Normal annual demand in U. S. for food stuffs at home, 530,000,000 bush els. Needs of allied nations from U. S. this year, 300,000,000 bushels. Seed demand in U. S. from this crop, 90,000,000 bushels. Therefore, if the law of supply and demand, backed by necessities of war and executed to meet those demands, are to control, a crop of 640,000,000 bushels of American wheat is going to be called upon to supply our actual minimum demand for 910,000,000 bushels, thus presenting a shortage of 270,000,000 bushels, or more than one-half the normal food supply de mand of this country on its own wheat crop. That can mean only half ration of flour for the people of this country and the necessary substitu tion of the next best thing—corn bread. The demand for corn meal, there fore, is going to be relatively increas ed. Food crop production in Georgia has turned considerably more to corn this year than In the past and next year—assuming foundation of expert opinion to bo good, that the war will not be short —the reason for an even larger Georgia corn crop than what ever this year’s will yield will before that time be self-evident. Therefore, the expressed opinion of the market experts of the Georgia De partment of Agriculture that "the corn belt is moving to and around Georgia.” * The Last Sifter Full is just as Good as the First in, a Sack of RISING SUN FLOUR l(Sdl-Riiiif end Ready Prepared) This result is obtained by mixing quality ingredients in just the proper proportions.
