Asa further step in its program for basing American relief work abroad on accurate surveys of conditions, the Red Cross War Council, of which Henry P. Davison is chairman, an nounces the dispatch of a Red Cross Commission to Roumania. This is the third Red Cross Commis sion to be sent to Europe since the or ganization of the War Council, to make first-hand investigations in belligerent countries. One commission, headed by Major Grayson M. P. Murphy, is al ready at work- in France; a second, under the leadership of Dr. Frank Bil lings, will arrive in a few days in Russia. The commission to Roumania, which is headed by Henry Watkins Ander son, a prominent lawyer of Richmond, I Virginia, will undertake at once, in ad dition to its investigation of sanitary and health conditions, actual relief work among the Roumanian refugees. To do this work, a Red Cross medical unit of twelve doctors and twelve nurses, accompanies the commission. Quantities of medical supplies, serums, vaccines, and foodstuffs, ur gently needed in Roumania, are being sent with the commission by the War Council. A special emergency appro priation of $200,000 has been voted for Roumania relief. “For the commission to Roumania, as for those sent to France and Rus sia, the Red Cross War Council has been unusually fortunate in obtaining the service of some of the leading | health and sanitary authorities of the country.” said Mr. Davison today in announcing the appointment. “It is one of the finest tributes to the patrio tism of the men —doctors, lawyers, en gineers, and business men—who have been called upon to undertake, at very great personal inconvenience, and of ten with no inconsiderable risk, these Red Cross missions in distant coun tries, that they have responded with out hesitation. No finer record will be written in this war than of these men who have gone forth under the Red Cross to carry aid and encouragement to those countries which for three years have been feeling the heavy brunt of war.” EAD STOMACHS— THE PENALTY. To the Sunday School and East Side Baptist Church: Your committee, appointed July 14, 1917, to prepare a memorial and reso lutions upon the loss of our former teacher and sister, Miss Polay Honea, beg to offer the following: God, the giver of life, and of all good things, having seen fit to take from our midst, Saturday, July 7, 1917, our dear beloved teacher, -we would dare not complain, but in the midst of sorrow and grief at our ldsi, We must give praise to His Holy name, while cur loss, ’tis Heaven’s gain. Be it re solved, First: That we the members of East Side Baptist chttrch and Sunday school extend our deepest and most abiding sympathy in this irreparable loss and may the Father of mercy aipl God of all comforts bless the family and rela tives in these dark hours. Second: That as a member of our church, as a Sunday school teacher, as a worker in every department, she was faithful, loving, kind, patient, and long-suffering. Words cannot express her influence over the young hearts she pictured the love of Christ to, from Sunday to Sunday. On her bed of af- fliction, she talked of the children and made an effort to prepare herself for better work when she should be per-, mitted to be with them again. Be it resolved that--we will miss her from our number, Hflh soft, sweet voice, hushed in slumber Shall be cherished in remembrance As fragrant sweet from memory’s flowers Third: That a Copy bt these resolu tions be placed on our minutes, a copy be sbnt to the bereaved family, a copy be sent to the local paper and to The Christian Tndex. Cottage cheese is one of the import ant meat substitutes, say specialists of the United States Department of Agriculture. It contains a larger per centage of protein (the chief material for body building) than most meats and furnishes this material at a lower cost. In every pound of cottage cheese there is about one-fifth of a pound of protein, nearly all of which is digesti ble. Meats, on the other hand, usually contain less protein and besides have a certain waste, such as bone and oth er inedible material. A pound of cot tage cheese daily would supply all the protein required by the ordinary adult engaged in a sedentary occupation. The following table shows that cot tage cheese is much cheaper than most meats in furnishing protein for the diet. For supplying protein, one pound of cottage cheese equals: 1.27 pounds sirloin steak. 1.09 pounds round steak. 1.37 pounds chuck rib beef. 1.52 pounds fowl. 1.46 pounds fresh ham. *■ I.4lmpounds smoked ham. 1.58 pounds loin pork chop. 1.31 pounds hind leg of lamb. 1.37 pounds breast of veal. In addition to protein, energy for performing body work must be fur nished by food. Asa source of energy also, cottage cheese is cheaper than most meats at present prices The fol lowing table shows the comparison when energy is considered. On the basis of energy supplied, one pound of cottage cheese equals: 8 1-3 ounces sirloin steak. 111-4 ounces round steak. 11 1-4 ounces chuck rib beef. 10 3-4 ounces fowl. 51-2 ounces fresh ham. 5 ounces smoked ham. 6 ounces loin pork chop. 7 1-3 ounces hind leg of lamb. 12 3-4 ounces breast of veal.
