Progressive Citizenship.
A fine example of progressiveness,
as well as a manifestation of fine
spirit, was that shown at the meeting
which resulted in the formation of the
Bartow County Mining Association
last Monday night.
Bartow county is this year produc
ing more wealth than any county in
Georgia, perhaps in the south. With its
rich agricultural lands in full cultiva
t on: with its farmers busy as never
before in utilizing every acre of
ground and every minute of time in
reaching the maximum of production,
the promise today is that the yield in
Bartow county will be superior to that
ever attained before. It follows, there
fore. that Bartow county -will be
among the first of -the agricultural
counties of Georgia when the record
for 1917 is told.
And yet it has another source of
wealth, equal, if not superior, this
year, In value, to all its agricultural
products. Miners of barytes are thor
oughly exploiting and developing the
rich barytes deposits of this county,
giving employment to labor, swelling
the pay rolls of industrial employ
ment, purchasing every form of ma
terial that can be procured here, and
making possible a greatly increased
volume of business in stores and
banks and in the demand for agricul
tural products. The same can be said
also with reference to the mining of
ochre, of manganese, of iron ore and
of bauxite.
These two industrial arts, agircul
ture and mining, have placed Bartow
county this year in the forefront of
the wealth producing counties of the
south, and in the sense that wealth
is derived from the soil and comes
from the land, Bartow county is of
right and ought to be the first county
in Georgia.
In the eager and active pursuit of
the mining industry perhaps not as
much care and expense has been given
to the matter of prevention of muddy
water entering the water'courses con
tiguous to these mines as could be.
To mine any mineral in Bartow county
makes necessary the use of large
amounts of water for the purpose of
separating the ore from the material
in which it is found. Miners have
sought to get this ore as cheaply as
possible, the mining industry being
a hazardous enterprise and good busi
ness requiring that minerals be raised
at a minimum of expense. When,
therefore, the miners found that they
were putting into the streams that
which rendered the water unservice
able to riixarian owners and that com
plaint had arisen, they immediately
manifested a purpose to meet these
w ho w r ere engaged in another valuable
productive energy half way.
Thus was brought about a meeting j
of farmers and miners of Bartow coun
ty and thus was assembled the lead
ing wealth producers of this section of
Georgia. Both classes of men Itfetjig en
gaged in a similar enterprise, that of
increasing the wealth power of this
county and nation, it follows that a
mutual understanding was quickly
brought about.
It may .have been a very fortunate
thing after all that complaint was
made because in the first place it
brought the miners together to con-
sider this feature and this led to the
necessity of considering other fea
tures of interest to th'e mining indus
try, such as distribution of their pro
duct, the matter of handling trans
portation facilities and the various
other things which could he done in
concert more effectively than by in
dividual effort. But most of all, it
brought together the two really pro
ductive energies of the county and re
sulted in an understanding between
these two classes of useful citizens
which is bound to r suit in good to
every other class of business, as well
as that in which they are particlarly
engaged.
The Bartow County Mining Associa
tion made it manifest on Monday
night that it intends to have all its
members strictly adhere to the rule
t’-nt water shall be returned to the
at reams in as clear condit on, if pos
sible. as when originally subtracted
mob :-treams. It was also de
clared u be she purpose of the orgc.M-
ization to promote every other form of
productive energy in the county and,
hence, the mining association becomes
itself a help to the agriculture inter
est and all other business interests
will naturally profit as a result of the
progress of these.

comforting words in the following
statement.
O. R. McElrov, carpenter, X. Gilmer

passed too frequently and were very
annoying. My back was none too
