C. H. S. UNDER COPE
WINS AT FOOTBALL.
The Cartersville High school foot
ball team has played two games of
football recently, winning both game. .
The victories have been such as* to in
spire the boys to great effort to win
ail the games on the schedule. Having
as their coach Mr. Harris Cope, who
takes the same enthusiastic interest
in these young athletes that he did as
coach at Sewanee, where he always
1
made this university team a hot con- j
tender for football honors, the boys
feel that they will be given the very I
finest and most expert direction and
training. Mr. Cope himself has been !
greatly pleased with the progress j
eiiown by the team individually and
collectively, and there is no doubt but
that his interest in the boys has in
spired them to great effort and his
presence with the team creates quite
-a sensation among the opposing teams
-who have met the Cartersville High
school boys in foot/ball conflict.
The iboy9 won their first game over
Marietta with a score of 12 to 0. They
were a little doubtful of their team at
first, for most of the boys were new
to the game. But Mark Dodd, one of
the new ones, proved himself worthy
of a place in the back field by making
a touch down the first time he receiv
ed the ball. Ralph Hawkins broke
through the opposing line and inter
cepted a punt. James Knight picked
up the ball and ran for the second
touchdown. Bear Cat Jolly starred by
bringing every man to the ground that
tried to come around his end.
The second game was warn over
Cedartown in Cartersville with a score

THIS IS U WEEK
IN BARTOW COUNTY
The food administratoi is asking
j that every farmer in Georgia, as well
:as every other state, sow at least
| wheat enough to supply his family.
In llartow county it will take from
three to ten acres of land, well pre
pared, to raise this much wheat.
This request, which is intended for
the best interest of our peo’ple, and is
, advanced for the reason that there is
|at one and the same time a great
shortage and a great need for wheat,
is due to the fact that the production
of wheat in Georgia ought to be doub
led in order to insure bread at rea
sonable prices and to avoid a wheat
bread famine.
To everyone who has a son or broth
er or friend in the army this appeal
ought to be effective. The fact is
brought *lonie to sHch and this is nec
essary as an aid to our country in war
in order that our soldiers will receive
while away sufficient of wheat bread
to nourish them. To every other per
son the appeal is made in order to en
list the aid in behalf of the country.
The county agent in everiry county
where such officers are employed will
furnish data and information relating
to seed and how to treat it as well as
the preparation of the land for the
12 years of age.
First prize, a Beautiful Doll.
Second prize, Ivoroid Photo Frame.
Third Prize, Silk Handkerchief.
Each little girl in this contest will
get a present.

Cincinnati Authority Tells How to
Dry Up Any Corn or Callus So It
Lifts Right off.
You corn-pestered men and women
need suffer no longer. Wear the shoes
that nearly killed you before, says this
Cincinnati authority, because a few
diops of freezone applied directly on a
tender, aching corn stops soreness at
once and soon the porn loosens so it
can be lifted out, root all, without
a bit of pain.
A quarter of an ounce of freezone
costs very little at any drug store, but
is sufficient to take off every hard or
soft corn or callus. This should be
tried, as it is inexpensive and is said
not to inflame or even irritate the sur
rounding tissue or skin.
If your wife wears high heels she
will be glad to know of this. —fadvt.)
purpose of sowing wheat. Those who
wish information upon this subject
should* call upon C. H. Cox, county
agent, or write him aVonce.
It is understood that the banks will
lend money in order to enable farmers
to purchase setjd wheat.
This week is wheat week and every
efiort is being put forward throughout
Georgia to nave it observed generally.
The following letter has been sent
out by the Georgia State College of
Agriculture and United States Depart-
ment of Agriculture co-operating:
“The week beginning Monday, Oc
tober 15th, has been designated by Dr.
Andrew M. Soule, Federal Food Ad
ministrator for Georgia, as Wheat
\\ eek and it will be observed by farm
ers all over the state by the prepara
tion of the land or the planting on
every farm of at least enough wheat
foi home consumption. Dr. Soule says.
‘From three to five acres sown in
wheat should supply the average fain
ily of five persons with all the flour
necessary.’
“The program announced by the
secretary of agriculture and state ag
ricultural officials and state councils
df defense calls for the sowing of
*7,237,000 acres of wheat in the United
States in 1917-1918. To do her share
Georgia must sow 786,000 acres which
is an increase of 100 per cent over her
acieage of last year.
“The average yield of wheat for
Georgia is very low. In fact, the aver
age for the last ten years is only 10.7
bushels per acre. At this rate Georgia
should produce next year with the in
creased acreage 8,410,200 bushels of
wheat, which is about one million less
'ban we normally consume.
“The average consumption of wheat
per capita in the United States is
about 5 1-4 bushels. While this figure
may be a little high in the southern
slates where corn bread is substitut
ed for wheat flour still it will serve
as a basis for calculating the needs of
the average family.
‘‘While three to five acres will sup-
average family still it is urged
that farmers in sections of the state
where wheat can be profitably grown,
sow larger areas. In recommending
this large increase in the wheat acre
age officials have taken into account
the orop rotation on the farm, which
suenld be maintained *in the interes’
of spring planted crops.
“The Wheat Week movement will
be conducted in the counties by the
county agents of the State College of
Agriculture who are in close touch
with the farmer and know something
of hia problems. Much work has been
done by the representatives' of the col
lege in procuring seed and their treat
ment against disease. They are in po
sition to advise as to the best methods
Of soil preparation, planting and fer
tilizing. " ! "

RECORD OF THE PAST

they have done many times in years

statement.
O. R. McElroy, carpenter, X. Gilmer

trouble 1 had was brought on 1 believe
by straining myself at my work or by
exposure. The kidney secretions pass

at times and pained me. I used Doan’s
Kidney Pills for these troubles and I
am glad to say they did me so much
good that for some time now 1 have
been free from any sjgn of the com

OVER THREE YEARS LATER Mr.
McElroy said: “Though my work is
