Destroying Stalks and Getting Rid of All Weeds and Rubbish now Will Reduce 801 l Weevils Next Year. \Vahingtoun, D. C.. Nov. 1.- —Next i year’s boll weevils can be fought very effectively today. The Bureau of En ■ tcmolcgy of the United States Depart | n.ent of Agriculture urges that all weeds and*rubbish be cleaned out of i ootton fields throughout the South at I this time. All staiks still standing in the field should be destroyed by the 1 time of frost or as soon thereafter as I possible. This cleaning up will de ‘ crease the possible destruction of boj.l weevils next year. The si>ecies -is ! g’ eatly reduced in numbers this year, | but although the boll weevil’s strength i--, weakened at present he will try to regain some ground next year. To destroy weeds, rubbish and stalks now is to destroy to a large extent his pros pective army for that drive next sea son. A concerted campaign throughout the South, if taken up immediately and pressed vigorously, will save a consid erable amount of cotton next summer. Quick action is the watchword for this work. Reports to the Bureau of En tomology from all field men in the cot ' ton belt and from State entomologists | indicate that this has been one of the lightest boll weevil years since the pest entered the country. The only sections in which the damage has been ■ comparatively heavy are the Sea Is i land sections of Florida and southern Georgia, and the northern portions of the Mississippi Delta. The cold weather of the early part of 1916. caused a fail ing back of the weevil around the en tire limits of-its dispersion last year and resulted.in a great reduction of weevils throughout the South. How ever, about Aug. 1, the weevils began to regain some of this territory and re ports indicate that there will be some points which have remained infested throughout the year. These places will bo food for dispersion this fall. There fore, it is very important that a con certed campaign be undertaken now to clean up the fields and lessen further the boll weevil damage next year. IS Thursday, November 10, has been designated by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce as Georgia PrOduccts Day for 1918. This announcement has just been made by H. G. Hastings, Presi dent of the Chamber. Thomas R. Gentry, Division Com mercial Superintendent of the South ern Bell Telephone Company, has been named Chairman of the Georgia Pro ducts Day celebration this year for Georgia, as-well as the cities of New York, Detroit and Baltimore. * Georgia Productss Day is celebrated each year by the holding of public din ners in all the cities and towns of the Slate. This year the day will also be celebrated in New York, Baltimore and Detroit. This year the day will l>e doubly significant. The celebration was in augurated five years ago to stimulate production of foodstuffs in the state to offset the coming of the boll weevil. This year a greater food production is also demanded on account of the war with Germany, rn tact increased crops was primarily the first war measure t.) be considered and put into oper ation. However, in the celebration of Georgia Products Day this yAr food conservation will by no means be over looked. It is the request of the pro moters that the menu this year be not ar elaborate one, but rather consist of fruits, vegetables, etc., in view of the movement now' underway to conserve the meat supply of the country.
