Nov. 21.—1n line with the recommendations cf the Rail roads’ War Board, orders have been is sued by the Nashville, Chattanooga & Sr. Louis Railway that hereafter no crossties are to be burned along the right of way, at least until all danger of a fuel shortage is past. ' All ties take n from the tracks in making renewals are being stacked and these will be available for fuel by citizens in the various communities ce;ved by the system after the track forces and section men have been sup plied. “it has been the custom of the road for years to permit its section forces to use damaged crossties for fuel, but this year all ties that can be used for this purpose are being saved. Chief Engineer Hunter McDonald says that no tics will be burned until all danger of a fuel famine has passed. Already thousands of ties have been stacked at points along the system where renewals have been made and in this way the road hopes to do its bit towards promoting fuel conserva tion. RURAL CARRIER EXAMINATION. To be Held on December 8, 1917, at 11:30 A. M. The Cnited States Civil Service Com mission has announced an examination or the County of Gordon, Ga., to be held at Dalton and Cartersville, on De cember 8, 1917, to fill the position of rural carrier at Calhoun, Ga., and va cancies that may later occur on rural routes from other post offices in the above-mentioned county. The examin ation will be open only’ to male citizens who are actually domiciled in the ter ritory of a iost office in the county and who meet the other requirements set forth in Form No. 4 977. This form and application blanks may be obtained from the offices mentioned above or •# from the United States Civil Service Commission at Washington, D. C. Ap plications should be forwarded to the Commission at Washington at the earl iest practicable date. The vacancy for which this examina tion is announced is caused by the en listment *o’f the carrier formerly em ployed on the route. Upon his honor able discharge from the military ser vice of the Government' he will be en titled to reinstatement' to his former posit’on as carrier on this route in ac cordance with tlie statute approved July 28, 1916, which is as follows: “Any postal employee who has en tered the military service of the United States or who shall hereafter enter it shall, upon being honorably discharged therefrom, be permitted to resume his position in the postal department which he left to enter such service.” However, any person appointed to this position may, in the discretion of the Post Office Department, be as signed to other parts of the postal ser vice: or transferred to other branches of the classified service for which lie is eligible. POSTM ASTER EXAMINATION. At the request of the Postmaster General the United States Civil Ser vice Commission has announced an ex amination to he held at Rome, Ga., on December 12, 1917, for the position of “Postmaster” at Cartersville, Ga. This office has an annual compensa tion of $2,400. To be eilgible for this examination an applicant must be a citizen of the United States, must actually reside within the delivery of the office and have so resided at the time the present vacancy occurred. Applicants must have reached their i twenty-first but not their sixty-fifth ! birthday on the date of the examiha i lion. Application Form 304 and full in formation concerning the requirements of the examination may be secured from tiie Local Secretary at the Post office or from the Civil Service Com mission, Washington, D. ROAD LOANS MAN TO THE GOVERNMENT. The Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway has “loaned” C. H. Crawford, assistant engineer of the Mechanical Department, to the Gov ernment and he will be a member of the Storage Committee of the War in dustries Board o." the Council of Nat ional Defense, having already gone to Washington to take up his new duties. During his service on the committee his salary nd expenses will be borne by the road as an act of patriotism. Chairman Cooke of the Committee in a letter to President Peyton takes oc casion to commend the roaxl for its ac tion and says that the railroads of the country are rendering a splendid ser vice to the Government through un selfish co-operation.
