When you enter by telephone
announce your name
Saying “Hello/' “Whatnumber
is this,” and “Who is speaking,”
wastes your time and that of the person
you call.
As soon as your party answers, the
correct practice is to announce your
name and start the call in the same di
rect manner that you use in a face-to
face meeting.
For example, say, “Mr. Jones
speaking, I should like to talk with Mr.
Smith,” or “Jones speaking, Mr. Smith,
please,” or if Mr. Smith has answered
with his name, say “This is Mr. Jones.”
And when you answer a telephone
ALWAYS announce your name first.

the 3ARTOW TRIBUNE-tHe CARTERSVILLE NEWS, NOV. 22, 1917.
THE NATION MUST CONCEN
TRATE AND CONSECRATE ALL
e are face to face with the most
stupendous crisis in human history.
Hi is is the most momentous hour that
civilization has known. There is not
middle ground. It is death or victory
Heath to our country; death to the
women and babies of the land; death
to its men; death to our civilization
and to the civilization of the world, all
on the side; or a complete victory
of this country and the Allies over
Germany on the other side.
The struggle will be a long and des
perate one. It will tax to the utmost
every latent and every developed men
tal, moral, spiritual, financial and phys
ical force of this country.
Ho who is a slacker in thought, in
word or deed Is an enemy to every
woman and every child in this country,
an enemy to our nation and to civiliza
tion.
He who is not willing to throw into
this contest, in his office, on lvis farm,
:r ‘ His pulpit, in his teacher’s chair, in
his work as a clerk, as an editor, as a
mechanic, or as a day lal>orer, every
ounce of his strength, mental and
physical, and die if need be in the
work for his country, as the soldier on
the battlefield, is a degenerate, a
slacker, a traitor, despicable creature
who should be spurned of all men, as
we believe he will be in the eyes of
the Almighty as the lukewarm whom
God has said will be spewed out of His
mouth because lie is neither hot nor
cold.
Let it be preached Trom the pulpit,
let it be taught in the classroom, let It
be proclaimed wherever men meet; let
every individual soul outside of the
insane asylum, think and speak in
terms of consecration and concentra
tion of all that is in him and all- that
he has, to this, the greatest task to
which the world has ever been called.
We can win, we can gloriously win,
if the nation will consecrate its all to
the winning. But it means a fearful
sacrifice of the flower of the nation’s
life thrown upon the altar in defense
of all that men and women hold dear
on earth. It means consecration to the
nation's salvation or eternal damna
tion by Germany. Which do you
choose?

BARTOW COUNTY DESERTERS
NOT PUNISHED BUT REWARDED.
hrom time immemorial it has al
ways been the custom during war
times to punish all deserters severely,
and sometimes with death. But. this
was ahs brought about many changes
and established many customs never
known before. A number of deserters
living in Bartow county were not pun

reaping rewards as they had good
cause to desert.
They are people who have been con
nected commercially for a long time
with prominent mercantile houses and
been buying goods from them, but of
late on account of rapid advances in
prices have deserted these houses and
moved their trade over to Hardaway’s,
where they are buying the same goods
about 25 per cent cheaper than the
others would sell them, and getting
their reward in the 25 per cem. saving
in all kinds of dry goods, notions,
household and kitchen goods, and some
groceries.
They are buying from Hardaway
Octagon, Sweetheart and Ivory soap
and Naptha washing powders at 6c
