AVIATORS PASSED
THROUGH GEORGIA
ON IMPORTANT TRIP
Lit ut. VV. E. Brown came over to
Cartersville, Tuesday afternoon, bring
ing with him a damaged motor from an
areoplune. which had been forced to
land near Dallas, early Tuesday mora
ine, as a result of an accident. He had
the Cartersville Foundry and Machine
Company make the necessary repairs,
and left Wednesday vaith the motor
which had been repVm’ed. Upon plac
ing it in his aeroplane, he will resume
his cross-country flight to Wright
Field, near Dayton, Ohio.
Lieut. Brown is a native of Paulding
county and has a number of relatives
in this section of the state. He is a vet
eran of the European war, and was shot
down by a Hun aviator, hut managed
to land behind the American lines with
a shattered knee. He, did not suffer
this wound, however, before he had
considerable experience, and several
thrilling encounters above the battle
lines. While he is not accredited with
bringing down any Hun planes, he said
he assisted ir. the destruction of sever
al.
After he received his wound, lie was
mvalkled home, hut upon recovering,
was sent to Wright Field, and upon ar
riving there was assigned to active
! duty. Several weeks ago, in company
with four other aviators, he left New
York City on a trip that took tiie party
down (he Atlantic coast as far as Flor
ida. Then they came back north, land
ing at Souther Field, near Americus.
Spending a short time there, they head
nortliward, and were enroute to Day
ton. when they were forced to land
as a result of the trouble to one of their
engines.
He was a most interesting talker,
and said his party on the present trip
l was engaged in laying out a route for
i the aerial mail service, soon to he in
' uuy mated by the Government, which
| expects to use large numbers of aero
planes which were prepared for war
purposes.
