I SAVANNAH, Oa., Oct. 2.—Yesterday
marked the end of Savannah’s restrict
ed districts.
Both the East Side and West Side
1 districts were s,ld to be virtually de
serted last night. The police reported
; that the work of closing the districts
had been accomplished sucessfully.
The few women who expect to leave
and who have not already gone will
1 get aw ay In a day or so.
I Several proprietors of houses In the
segregated districts who own proper
ty have Indicated their Intention of
remaining In Savannah and leading
respectable lives. Some of tho inmates
have found employment In the city
ond will remain. A few are reported
to have married In Savannah.
There has been a general exodus for
the last month, In fact since It was
snnounced that the districts were to
i be closed. At the time the mayor
announced hls Intention of cleaning
up the tenderloin districts there were
1 only about half as many women In tho
city as were tho case before the pro
hibition law went Into effect.
1 About forty houses which have been
used for Ifmoral purposes have been
vacated since the mayor determined
to close the dletrlcts. About sixty
houses In all have been vacated since
the exodus began. Counting those
that weft vacated before the fayor’e
jrrder was Issued it Is estimated that
fully 100 of which formerly were
jused for Immoral purposes are now
1 available as legitimate bueloess houses
| or as residences for respectable citi
zens.
I The police are determined that the
districts shell retain closed. Chief
1 Bryant says he Intends to do hie ut
most to carry out the mayor's orders
to the letter. The women who remain
•r. the city with announced Inten-
tentlon of leading reepecUble lives
will be expected to live up to their
promise.
The order of the mayor to close the
restricted district followed official
notification rora the government that
the conditions here were objectionable.
