Abruzzi Rye the Best Winter
Cover Crop For the South
(From The Progressive Farmer.)
Abruzzi rye as a combination win
ter cover crop and grazing crop for
the South has no equal. And when
planted in the cotton fields imme
diately after the first picking, this
rye quickly makes a heavy growth, and
by December or January is ready for
grazin?. Ordinarily two or three
months’ grazing can be had before
time to plow under the rye for spring
planting of other crops. Two pur
poses are thus filled: First, a cheap
and nutritious gren crop is provided
for the cattle during the winter
months; and second, a cover crop
prctectB the land from washing and
teaching by hard winter rains and
conserves the fertility of the soil.
For cover crop purposes only
Abruzzi rye ig the most valuable crop
we have for light lands and for con
ditions where leguminous crops will
not thrive or where the land is re
quired for spring planting before the
clover crops have attained a full
growth. Vetches, clover and other
leguminous crops are also good for
cover crop purposes, but the fact that
these crops in tlje South do not make
a heavy winter growth before time
for plowing makes them of less value
than aheavicr, earlier growing crop.
Compared to native varieties of rye,
Abruzzi makes at least double as
much cover crop gworth. After many
years of experiment on our own
farms, and from experiments con
ducted by hundreds of the larger
farmers all through the South, wo are
convinced that Abruzzi rye is the best
winter cover crop for gener:.I pur
poses in the South. It is easy tc
plant, grows on all kinds of soil,
thrives in the poorest sandy soils
where other crops fall, requires no
inoculation, makes a heavy early
growth, conserves humus in the soli,
prevents leaching and washing
soil by the winter rains, and restores
plnat food to the soil.

THAT SUMTER FARMERS ARE

TO MABKET.
The Albany Herald says:
According to Mr. C. B. Burley, wh
has Juat returned from Sumter coun
ty, the farmers of that county ar
being seriously handicapped In gather
ing their cotton on accunt of an acute
scarcity of labor. Many fields are
white with cotton, very little of which
has been picked, and pickers are not
to be had, due to so many negroes
having gone north. Mr. Burley re
ports that much of the cotton has
fallen from the bolls, and some of It
Is sprouting on the ground. Sumter
ratted almost as much cotton this
year as she did before the advent of
the boll weevil, and with the vreat
exodus of negro labor, tht formers
up there are solely put to It.
