Mr. Frank Lanier has been appointed chairman of tho general committee, with John W. Shiver and J. E. Mathis associated with him. Mr. R. J. Thompson, of Cincinnati, publisher of a banking magazine, who ha g volunteered his Services to the government, J® here for the purpose of llreting the local undertaking. Amerlcus and Sumter county have sent more than 300 young men to the army and navy, and fo r that roason It is believed that the campaign here will make an especial appeal. \ W. J. Pennington, of Macon county, formerly of this county, was in tho city Saturday. Mr. Pennington is one *f the most successful small farmers of his county, and or.o of the most progressive. This year ho operated a four-horse farm, and he and hU nlnctcen-year-old son did all of the work. They did not engage a single hand. Only five acres of cotton were rais ed, but plenty of corn, potatoes, pca3 and the like wero planted. Mr. Pen nington raises practically everything lie eats, Including meats, and makes enough money off his diversified crops to lay aside a neat suta each year. Bragg, stabbed and kill ed a negro named Frank Cray late Saturday night, and Immediately made his escape. It is believed that he has left tne city. The killing occurred In front ot Tinsley's restaurant on Lamar street butcher knife being tbe weapon uaed. The negro made a remark to whic-. Bragg, who wa 8 drinking, objected When the negro repeated It, Bragg rushed Into the lunch-stand, seized a knife, and then made an attack cn tho darkey. Death resulted several hours later.
