Daniel Webster, when well-likker;d cnee, offered to pay tho entire gov- ornment debt. But with the thing running way up into the billions now, w e doubt if an y amount of bottled en thusiasm could provoke the same "er !f he were living today. Under government regulation, flour has keen brought to $13 per barrel, a saving or $3.50 per barrel to tho consumer, and the price of wheat Is a fixed one of $2.20 per bushel. Figures compiled by the govern ment show there are 625,000 families of the accepted average of five to each family in Georgia. The average con sumption of flour per family is four barrels per annum, of a total of 2, 500.000 barrels of flour in Georgia ea.'h year. The reduction in the price of ftou r to the consumer of $3.50 per barrel on four barrels a year to each of the 625,000 families <n this state runs up to $8,750,000 saved In Georgia in one year under food control regu lations. Then, there Is another side to th9 operation of this system. Before the government took charge of the vvho.it and flour situation tho price to the consumer was governed by speculation and bad already reached $16.50 per barrel, with every Indication that it would havo gone to any higher figure speculators could force ft; probably more than $20. At that time and un der that condition, the farmer was getting $1.40 per bushel for Ills wheat end he. too. was In the hands ot the speculator. The government. In the process of regulating the raw and f.nished product, fixed tha price of wheat at $2.20 per bushel. Under the Old system of speculation the farmer, for the four bushels of wheat In a barrel of flour, got $5.60; under the new system of food control he gets $x.*u lor the same four bushels of ns well as more thoroughly arouse them to a liner appreciation of the tremendous seriousness of our position In the war. General Wood says: “It Is mere camouflage to re tard our entry into the war until a time when our allies cannot pro tect us ns they do today, and when we shall hnve to bear the bulk of tho burden ourselves. “We aro now preparing to do what sound judgment dictated wo should do a generation ago. For tunately, w e nre preparing behind the llne s ot allies strong enough to protect ns while wo prepare... There is not a bit of evidence that was has passed away, or that this Is going to be the last war. It Is more likely that It ls the begin ning of a great scries ot wars. The In terests of different peoples seldom coincide for a long time, and hu- nan nature Is bound to assert It self. “The war is not going to be won by smiting the enemy from the Mr. It will not be won by machines, but by men directing machines. We arc going to win—I feel cer tain of that—but it will be after a struggle on which we will look back with horror. We will create a flamo hot enough to make America a real melting pot. "France already has been bled white, because of tho great sacri fices she has made In the Allies' cause. In another year England will feci that her maximum has been reached. In the meantime, the soldiers of the United States will be In training and preparing to lift the burdens from the shoul ders of its two allies. Then the tight will be on, and on until vie-.. tory comes. To do this, the men must be thoroughly prepared, they must be surrounded by the best Influences. They must have the support of every man and wo man who loves the flag.
