The most absorbing political ques
tion in Georgia today centers around
the pending senatorial campaign.
“Is Murphy Candler going to ran?’’
“Can W. J. Harris beat Hardwick,
with otfiers In the race?"
“Has Hardwick any real solid
strength ’»
“Will the national administration
endorse and support Mr. Harris?”
These are only a few of the ques.
tlon asked whenever men gather to
discuss politics.
Atlanta being the political Mecca
for all Georgians, It is there that the
most politics—sometimes, too, the
strangest, queerest, most Impossible
politics—are talked.
Officeholders In the capital and those
all-knowing, professsional politicians
In Atlanta, are however, rather puz
zled now. They don't know exactly
whore they ai^e and what’ really what.
They hear reports coming from all
sections of Georgia about the Increas
ing popularity of Harris , and the
steadily diminishing unpopularity of
Hardwick, and they—the professional
politicians, who aro not for Harris,
and wont’ b e,until they are absolute
ly suro he Is a winner—are doing
their level best to discount these re
ports. I
But the summary is this, gleaned
from tho political chaff that ran
through the mill during a recent stay
In Atlanta:
Tardwlck Is not near as strong
ns he was six months ago. Only
in counties north of Griffin does
be possess any genuine strength.
With tho exception of two coun-
jti|5d fti southeast Georgia—these
being Emanuel and Tatnall.
, j i iThere Is a distinct antl-Hard-
1 wick sentiment all over Georgia.
0 : Six months hence it Is believed
that It will be actually dangerous
for Hardwick to give expreselon
* bn the Htunip to sentiments he has
some Theodore Roosevelt, and yet he
I? a man that is not easily placed or
defined.
In the various discussions about him,
there has been an effort to analyze hi3
nature, to define him as a man, to as
sign him to a definite place In history.
For Instance, the Baltimore Sun says:
• Roosevelt Is a great deal of a blend,'
a great deal of a composite picture." I
And no wonder, when -,ou consider
tho man’s ancestry. There Is In him
a curious mixture of Scotch, German,
French, .English and Dutch. Among
his ancestors, the descent from whom
may he traced in a direct line, are the
celebrated Douglas family of Scotland,
Robert I, “The Bruce,” Charlemange,
Alfred the Groat, Wlttklnd and Wil
liam the Conqueror.
Roosevelt's paternal ancestors had
lived in this country eight generations
before he was born. His mother was
eight generations removed from Scot
land. This woman was Martha Bul
lock, born on the family plantation In
uary, we read:
This Is the coldest month of the
year In Virginia, with a mean tem
perature of thirty-eight degreee.
For this reason, it Is a month
when thousands of homes In Vir
ginia are sealed tightly to keep
out the cold, and Is In consequence
a month of bad colds, of grippe, of..
pneumonia and of consumption.
An open window Is better than
an open grave.
A stitch In the underwear may
save a stitch in the side.
Disease seldom comes in a win
dow that is open for air.
Under February appears more ad
vice regarding consumption, Influenza
arid similar diseases, with the follow
ing epigrammatic injunction at the
bottom of the page:
A heavy overcoat is lighter I
carry than a heavy cold.
March is devoted to a discussion of
