Lieut, Irwin Is already well ad
vanced, having' taken advantage
of bis position as radio expert dur

self with the work of an aviator.

SOUTHER FIELD, March 4.—Cole
bratlng the fact that Souther was to
tie retained as a permanent flying
field, nearly all the flying officers
were In the air yesterday with their
favorite airships. Flights were made
•ver the city and Andersonville. At
the latter place several of the officers'
wives weer there Inspecting the bis-
trric spot, with whom the flyers ex-
aba- red salutes.
A flying officer, commenting on the
aewi tMlcy, said:
“Tho government, as well as your
representative at Washington, can be
congratulated upon the selection of
Souther Field as a permanent flying
station. Much credit Is also due The
Tnnes-Recorder In calling attention to
the merits of the field.
"Of course, we officers are not wed.

likely to be changed about at any
.time but when a place has merit it Is
hard not to endorse It I hope I may
he retained here until Souther Is again
filled up with students to be taught
the art of flying.’’
Now that Souther Field Is to be per
manent, steps will be taken to beautify
It as far as possible, as Is being done
at Kelly field, San Antonio. The
grounds in front of headquarters are
aow being fixed up as a sample of
what may be done around other build-
lags In the field.
Word has been- received here that
the flying Held at Fort Worth, Tex., Is
Being practically closed.

Rotary Club, the new Aero Club (to be formed) and all the
Good People of Americus.
Greetings:
You have done much for the soldier boys during our stay
here and we appreciate it very much, but there is one more thing
we need, and that is a conveyanc to and from Americus.
In both fields out here now we have about 600 men and you
may expect another 1,000 as the fields are to be made permanent.
We want you to use your influence with the Central of Geor
gia railway to have them Rice us a train between Arles Station aqd
Americus, to run two or three -times a week, leaving Arles about
6:30 p. m. and, returning, leave Americus at 11 o’clock on week
days, and on Sunday, perhaps, run to Americus in the morning and
)ut late in the afternoon, or after noon mess. This can be'fixed
