PLAINS, March 18.—T^o Plains
school has been in session regularly
since Christmas. Up to that time there
had been much time lost on account of
the influenza epidemic. By teaching on
Saturday, the time is gradually beng
made up, though the term will close
some time later than usual.
The High school at present Is par
ticularly interested in the anticipated
addition of an Eleventh grade to the
ppujra ot study. This will probably
necessitate the employment ot another
teacher. for the coming year. The
standard of colleges being higher now,
it will be Imperative to raise the cur
riculum here in order to make college
entrance. However, the decision still
rests with the school trustees as to
whether the grade will be added, and
as to whether the present Tenth grade
students will receive diplomas.
The Eighth grade had a! contest
last week ob "Memory Oems” of the
year. Georgia Harvey was awarded
thrift stamps for being able to give the
greatest number of quotations.
The girls ot the Sixth and Seventh
grades are busy on’ some compositions
which they will read in public soon.
Blue ribbons will be awarded to the
girls having the best essay and to the
best reader.
The boys of these same grades are
preparing orations for a public pro
gram, to be given soon.

SOUTHER FIELD, Man* 18.—Major
John W. Butts, executive ofllcer,
skilled aviator, and an authority, says
the size of landing field large enough
to take the DeHavlland "4” which has
speed up tj 120 miles or more an
hour and la propelled by the Liberty
400 horsepower motor, should be at
least 2,400 feet dong and 600 feet
wide, with low unobstructed ap
proaches, and a firm, well-turfed,
level soil These dimensions can be
considered as a maximum and safe
tinder certain atmospheric conditions
much less space can be utilized.
Now that the airplane is to be used
eo extensively In the Victory L>an
campaign and in other cross country
flying, the aeronautical information
ofllcer at Souther Field would be pleas
ed to file, for reference only, the lo
cation of flying fields to utilize close
to every city and town in the state.
Those who are inclined to furnish
this information may state the distance
from the field to central point, say the
postoffice. The information will be
useful and govern the direction, cross
country from Souther Field and it
conditions are satisfactory it Is quite
possible flights will frequently be made
to those places. Souther would like
to make a field landing map for all
Georgia, so that. In the future, when
asked by aviators “where can we land
in Georgia?” the Information can be
given at once.
Communications on this subject can
tie addressed "Aeronautical Infor
mation Officer, Souther Field, Ga.,"

than April 2, that they may be exam
ined and noted on tbe map before tbe

EIgbty-six thousand captflred German helmets are to be made to do
their bit in making the Victory Loan a success. Every purchaser of a
$10,000 bond is to receive one. Tbe Victory Loan Committee believing that
the supply will run short, has sent to France for more. In this picture
some of the boys who unloaded the helmets at a Brooklyn pier are seen
being put through the variations of the goose step (the German tango,
they call It) by Lieutenant F. R. Williams.
