2. What la his mission? (rr. 7-15).
(1) The Christian’s comforter, (y.

‘resentstlve who stands by the side
of the believer to strengthen, en
courage, defend from tbe enemy and
plead his cause before God tbe Father.

to give wisdom to discern God's will,
snd power to overcome temptation I
(2) The world’s Judge (vt. 8-11).
Victory Is to be achieved by the Spirit
working in and through the disciples,
(i) He will convict the world of slu
(v. 8). The root of all sin Is unbelief
in Christ (v. 9). This unbelief is not
'Primarily Intellectual, hnt moral. It
,'ls an unwillingness to surrender to
the divine will (John 8:18, 19). The
way the Holy Spirit convicts the world
Is through the testimony of thoso who
are Ailed with him. (b) He wilt con
vict the world of righteousness (v. 8).
This Is done through the resurrection
snd ascension of Christ (v. 10). His
coming forth from the grave and as
cension Into heaven was an Indisputa
ble proof that he was what he claimed
to b£ He is thus shown to bo the V
Wiighteous one whose merit may be ap- *
x preprinted by faith In -him. This Is ^
ever the way of salvation—conviction „
of sin and appropriation of the right- *
eousness of Christ (c) He will con- a<
Ivlct the world of Judgment to come (v.
8). Christ told of n Judgment to come. ao
The gunrnnteee of this.judgment Is !jj?

I'waa Judged at the cross, (v. 11 j cf. ,
John 12:31). 0r1
(3) The Christian's guide Into all i
truth (w. 12.13). The Bible la a splr- Cll
Ituai book, therefore If one would on
know Its meaning he must have tbe frc
Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 2:14). <*<
(4) Ho gloriAes Christ (w. 14, 15).
He does not speak of himself, hnt in
all things reveals Christ The only
way to know the glory of the Son of De .
God Is to have the Holy Spirit make It
known. He reveals all the divine
richea and grace that are in Christ. „„„
He makes real nnto them the person the
snd work of Christ.
II. The Holy 8plrlt Given (Acts
2:1-18).
1. Time—Pentecost (v. 1). This
was Afty days after the Passover Sab
bath (Lev. 23:15).
2. The marks of the Spirit (w. 3-4).
These are external and Internal:
(1) External, (a) Sound of a
mighty wind; no wind, but merely tbe
sound of wind. For thla sound to be
heard in the early morn attracted at
tention and caused the people to gath
er. The reference to wind suggests
the all-pervasive life-giving InAuence
of the SpIriL (b) Tongues of Home.
Each of the disciples was crowned
with such a tongue. The tonguea In
dicate the practical possession of the
Spirit's gifts, and the Are the purify-
'"R energy which removes the dross,
thus making effective the testimony.
(c) Speaking la foreign tongues. For
these bumble Galileans thus to speak
caused great amasemeot
(2) Internal. Thla la seen In the 1
.transformation wrought In the dia-
iclples. Instead of cowering before n
Jewish maid, Peter now boldly stood
.before the chief riders of the dty and
declared them to be guilty of murder-
lug the Son of God.
3. The effect (w. 5-18). (1) The
^multitude assembled In amusement
i»nd confusion. They heard the gospel
in their naUve tongues and Inquired
Ha meaning. (2) Some mocked and
'foolishly attempted to account for this
remarkable occurrence by accusing the
disciples of being drunk.
4. Fulfillment of prophecy (w. 14-
18). Wonderful things bad occurred.
