WEARINESS.
JP you’re tired, 0 toiling brothers, of the chores
you have to do, there are forty million others
who are just as tired as you. Sometimes when my
back is aching, and my feet ard said and sore, I
remark, "It's no use making earnest efforts any more;
for I’m weary of my burden, and my heart is cold
as ice; and I fail to see a guerdon I coneider worth
the price. Oh, I’m tired of splitting kindling and
I’m tired of packing coal; all the dreams I had are
dwindling, and my hopes are in the hole. Alt the
jobs I do are botches and I’m weary of it all; I am
tired of winding watches, I am tired of playing
ball.’’ And I look around for pity, and I find’ to
my surprise that the whole immortal city fairly
swarms with weary guys. They are tired of digging
’taters, tired of dodging the police, tired of shoe
ing alligators, tired of herding ducks and geese.
They are weary, ever, always, tired of all this world
provides; they are tired of growing galways, tired
of tanning children’s hides. So I’m tired of being
weary when I hear the others sob; though the path
of life be dreary, I won’t travel with the mob.

so vociferously that the demonstration
could not bo stopped. And when the infraction of
the Senate rules was denounced from the Senate floor
there were hisses from the galleries.
This incident would appear on its face to’show that
the public, at least in Washington, is against President
Wilson and the League of Nations.
But one who
knows Jim Reed wonders how the gallery would have
behaved had it been familiar with the fact that his
bitterness toward President Wilson is personal, result
ing from his failure last spring - to obtain for hia
friend and political henchman, Emmett O’Malley, the
faf job of Postmaster of his home city of Kansas City,
a matter which was in controversy for many weeks.
Jim Reed is a great orator. As a lawyer in Kan
sas City ho was considered far th e most powerful of
many able men in his arguments before a jury; he had a
way of winning his cades, whether the right and the
facts wer e on hia side or not Judgments he obtained
were sometimes set aside in the Supreme court,
where the spell of his oratory couldn’t reach to the same
degree. But he always had the crowd with him;
wherever he appeared in a case of any importance the
court room was always jammed to hear Jim Reed
speak. i
F r It was Jim Reed who made the Senate galleries
cheer yesterday—not the facte in the case of the peace
treaty or the League of Nations.

This quotation closes a letter to A. T. Vanseoy,
president of the Milwaukee Association of Commerce
from Mayor Hoan, of the same city, in which the latter
refuses to invite King Albert and Queen Elizabeth of
Belgium to visit Milwaukee. The mayor offers how
ever, to forward such an invitation presented by any
group of citizens.
And 99 millions of our 100 millions of people will
applaud the sentiment, eyen If not the language. It
must be admitted, however, that the Mayor of Milwau
kee has expressed his sentiment strongly enough. And
it can hardly be taken as “throwing off’’ on the king
and queen of little Belgium, either.

OUR MISSING PUBLIC.
Th e President’s inclusion of gentlemen like
John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and Elbert H. Gary among
his list of twenty-two men to represent the public will
raise the old question as to who the public is, any
way. His further selection of Charles Edward Rus

does not help settle the mystery. - At' the risk of of
fending extremists at one end or the other of the

unimpressive. It 6, probable that as a nation we eat
jj|oo much meat, but it is doubtful if we would be as
pell off without any meat. It has been shown by
Mdentiits that no nation of vegetarians ever achieved
Bk history any maHc of greatness to compare with

ployers, a separate party to the coming White House
conference, Rockefeller and Gary belong obviously to
the employer’s class. Similarly Russell and Spargo by
their writings and acts fall within the labor group,
another party to the conference, and therefore are
disqualified as the public’s representatives.
Who, it will be asked, could represent the pub
lic as such? Almost all the men Mr. Wilson has
named in this capacity represent really either labor,
