Just before adjournment yesterday
afternoon the board of county com
missioners, after tabling the request
of the Americus and Sumter county
Chamber of Commerce for nn appro
priation of $1,200, voted to give the
Chamber half that sum, or $600.
The action of the board came in
the day on a motion to reconsider
the previous action, made by J. E,
sion, in executive session on motion
of J. E. Oliver, of Plains, secretary
of the board, seconded by J. J. Wil
son, and concurred In by S. E. Stat-
ham, Mr. Poole and Chairman Ray
not voting. In making his motion to
table the request, Mr. Oliver declar
ed that the county had no money to
"give away” that it had recently
given to the Americus hospital and
to other things, and he did not favor
giving anything to the Chamber of
Commerce. Those who,voted with
him expressed themselves similarly.
Just before adjournment Mr. Poole

Ray remarked that he thought like
wise. And Mr. Poole proceeded to
explain why he thought as he did.
“When we wanted help in putting

merce got behind the movement and
it was put over. Just now the Cham
ber of Commerce is putting on a
county fair in every sense of the
word, for I doubt if Americus will
get a dollar's worth of direct bene

farmers of the county. And the
Chamber is always doing something
of benefit to the people of thfe coun
