I. The Baptism of Jesus (3:13-17).
While the forerunner was discharg
ing his office, the King emerged from
bis seclusion at Nazareth and de
manded baptism at John's hands. The
Incongruity of this with the purpose
of baptism brought from John a pro
test. but Jesus' explanation was satis
factory. so John baptized him. Touch
ing Christ's baptism, note:
• 1. Its significance. (1) Negatively,
(a) It did not menn bis own obedl-
euce to the commandment of God, be
cause his entire life hnd been lived
entirely within the will of God. Not
a moment In his entire life but what
was lived entirely In accordance with
the Father’s wilL (b) Not because he
had sin, for he was absolutely sinless,
harmless, undeflled, separate from
sinners. This separation was so com
plete that even the devil conld find no
occasion against him (John 14:30).
(21 Positively. Its significance Is
found In harmony with the central
purpose of hit coming. Into the world,
which was to secure for his people
salvation through death, burial and
resurrection.
2. Approval from the opened
heavens (w. 16, 17). Immediately
following his consecration to his work,
the heavens were opened and the
Spirit came and abode upon him, fol
lowed by words of approval from the
Father. These all were essential for
the work upon which Christ now en
tered—revelation (heavens opened).
Inspiration (dove abode upon him),
and approval (words from the Fa
ther).

'Ihls temptation was the opening

Christ and Satan. In this struggle.

2. The battle ground—the Wilder-

■ pleasant surroundings and failed; the
wood man was tempted In a bare

3. The method of attack. Since as
m»r Redeemer Christ sustains a three
fold relationship, Son of Man, Son of
Cod and as Messiah, each one was
made a ground of attack. (1) As Son
of Men. This was a test of the reality
of tit* humanity to demonstrate to
whether the humanity which he ob
tained through the Virgin tdrth was
real. The appeal was made to the
instinct of hunger. Hunger Is nat
ural and sinless. Having been forty
days and nights without food, ns a
normal nmn, Christ had n craving ap
petite. While the appetite was nof
sinful, to have satisfied It In a wrong
way would hnve been sin. (2) Son of

God's promise to a test Is to sin and

world from the devil. Now the devil
offers to surrender to him on the slm- |

of the cross. The kingdoms were

THE TRACTOR THE FARMER
HAS BEEN WAITING FOR—
Does Not Require Specially Built Implements
The Indiana One-Man Tractor is the ideal tractor
for the Southern farm. It can be used wherever
und whenever horses are used, from the «lay you
break your first ground until your
crop is harvested. It uses your
horseqlrawn seeding, cultivating
and harvesting implements with
out expensive hitches.
It is economically and easily oper
ated. Requires only one man to
operate and very little attention
or repair, over a lifetime—which
owners say is much longer than
tho average tractor. And, it is
especially efficient and conve
nient in close corners.
