! apeelal dispatches herein con-
jyjOT KNOWING Judge Z. A. Littlejohn of the Southwestern Cir-
' cuit personally, and not having heard his charge to the Sumter
grand jury and his private expressions about law and order as ap
plicable to the present time, the Moultrie Observer, a paper ummually
level-headed in its comment, says unjustly of Sumter's respected and
loved jurist:
Judge Littlejohn is a fine man and a good judge, or the editor of
this paper has had a wrong impression of him for a number of years.
Our good.impression was not improved by reading that the judge had
crltlc:zed the well-meaning efforts of Governor Dorsey to uphold law
and orderly processes in the state. There are others to give encour
agement to the mobs, night-riders and mighticr-than-thou bullies. Judge
Littlejohn says he doesn’t think very well of “washing dirty linen be
fore the public.” Maybe he is too little concerned of late about wash
ing linen at all. He lives close to the famous Scarborough store where
there has bean some dirty linen for quite a time, if we arc correctly
informed. If this linen had been brought out and washed, cither in
pubile or fn private, a life might have been saved. We do not enjoy
these dirty linen exhibits, but if it is a matter of making a name in
the world for our state or our community, we would rather have a name
of correcting evils and speaking out freely and openly against them than
a name for keeping them covered.

T^E OBSERVER has Judge Littlejohn down wrong. What he said
to the:gtand jury about the dispute over the governor's pamphlet
Was that life deplored the dispute between the executive and some of
the judiciary, which has resulted in each accusing the other, the
product of which would be the lowering of both in the respect of
the public and a consequent lowering of respect for law and all
those whose "business it is to. enforce the law.
Aa for "washing dirty linen in public," Judge Littlejohn did sa^
he thought no people ever benefited from that. In this he referred
to the charges of the governor and the'replica aa given widespread
publicity in the newspapers, instead' of whatever evidence the gov
ernor had being taken to the courts for sifting nnd punishment of the
wrong doets.
