SPARTA. Oct. 1.—John D. Walk-
tr, former bank president of a chain
of hanks throughout the state,
jointly indicted with Robert
lb.hues here Friday afternoon on the
charge of embezzlement in connec
tion with the disappearance of the
city’s sinking fund. This is the first
indictment returned against Walke
who left here myteriously several
years ago and subsequently was dis
covered in San Antonio, Texas.
Resuming its investigation of the
defunct bank of Sparta, after having
returned two indictments against
Holmes, its former president, Thurs
day, the grand jury returned foui

force in Georgia was built up to a

in federal circles that the law has not

mukes will be observed with interest
as the dry force in this section has
been considered one of*the best in

Director Fort has had charge of
the enforcement squad for only a
few weeks. Until recently his du
ties had to do with the supervision
of the distribution 6f alcohol and
similar products, hut when the office
of supervising agent, held hy D* J.
Gantt was abolished, he was placed
in authority over the dry agents.

To Show Doughboy to the East
Planning to introduce th** Ameri- j
cus-madc worjd war statue, “The,
•Spirit of the American Doughoy,* ,
into the East in thorough fashion,
three Americus men left Monday af
ternoon in a rcd-white-and-hlue reg- ,
• "George M. Cohan” automobile,
bound for Philadelphia and New
"irk. The men were J« D. Hooks,
c* Hawkins and Frank Marshall.
Messrs. Hooks and Hawkins have;
obtained the state rights for the sale
of the doughboy statues, both large
and “small in Pennsylvania and New J
York. Mr. Hawkins will open state!
distribution offices in Philadelphia!
and Mr. Hooks is New York city. 1
Mr. Marshall will In* associated with!
them ns assistant.
On their trip through the country
they expect to establish agencies for]
the doughboy statuettes in every
•ounty. They carried with them a.
apply of the miniatures for samples.
This supply will he replenished along ,
the route by shipments from tin* fac- i
tory in Americus.
The canin which they started their
long trip was a new Overland Four,
supplied by the Overland factory free i
n advertising feature. It was re-
painted by C. B. Vcntes, expert car
ami inuto painter, nnd presented a*
finished appearance as any job ever
turned out of a factory paint shop.
The
ntire top was painted a hriI
bant, flag red. The body was in
white, and th** running gears and
fenders in blue. On the sides of the
ear was the lettering, “The Spirit
of the American Doughboy,” and on
each of the four doors was a photo
graphic reproduction of the statu**,
neatly varnished over. The front of
each fender was surmounted by silk
en American flags in handsome hold
ers, and on th** radiator cap was n
doughboy miniature in gold finish.
Th** party left Americus in mid-af
ternoon Monday and reached Macon
at 8:30 o’clock last evening, where
they held a conference with Walter
Rylander, one of the manufacturers
of the doughboy statue. They ex
pected to reach Philadelphia in about
two weeks.
