Nov. 1.—Senator Thomas E. Watson, of Georgia, told the Senate today that his charge that 21 soldiers had been hanged in France without trial had been based on the statement of a soldier who said he had seen the gallows and had been told by the scaffold guard that this number of men had been Imaged. He read a telegram from this soldier, whose name was not diu- do. raying the gallows was at Gievus, France, and that the guard told him other men were to he hang ed on it- The resolution ordering a Special committee’ to investigate the charge of Senator Watson was adop ted unanimously by the Senate. The senate also unanimously adopted another resolution by Sena- j tor Brandegee, chairman of the spec- j i ll committee, authorizing the com- j mittce to subpoena witnesses documents, but left unsettled the question as to the exact charges of Watson which are to be investigated.
