One of the prettiest specimens of
amateur art that we remember ever
to have seen is an oil painting on ex-
! hibition this week at the bookstore of
i Mr. 8. S. Wilson. The subject so
j cbartniogly portrayed by the artist is
a rich Oriental scene, and the volup
tuous colorings, the vivid tenches of
tropical warmth here and there, the
graceful iioeations of the foreground,
the soft yet striking outlines of the
mellow background, furnish a combi
nation of art and poesy as rare as it is
enchanting. The painting is the
handiwork of Mrs. W. Y. Atkinson,
of this city, and the production fairly
entitles her to recognition as an artist
of no mean ability.

IN MEMORY OF JOHN R. SIMS.
“He that bclicveth and isjbaptized shall
be saved." ’
I am Mire he did belive it,
And his noble soul received it
As a passport to the golden throne;
It was no hallucination,
But an holy Inspiration
Such as true converts have shown.
Ills faith was like a mountain,
His love was like a fountain
That gushed with gratitude and love;
His heart was like a continent.
Filled with noble sentiment
From the eternal realm above.
> Up uad touched the chalice
That Jesus gave knd sanctified;
The golden rule he ever heeded
As a moral precept deeded
By Him that was crucified.
‘Tis said, “The whole shall be made
leaven,”
For love and mercy dwell in Heaven,
And all will be happy in that day;
John will meet bis friends in glory,
'Mid seraphic song and story;—
Let us pray, let us hope, that he may.

Just take your seat iD easy chair.
With your pedals high in air.
And smoke the “Newnan Girl” Cigar;
’Twill banish every worldly care,
And bring you blessings rich and rare,
And make you see things «s they are;
But if perchance some sudden lar
Your peace and happiness shall mar.
It matters not the lime, or where,
Nor it it come from near or far—
From earth beneath or distant star.
In weather either foul or fair,
At early dawn or midday glare—
Neither fume nor fret nor swear.
Nor stretch your eyes nor blink nor blear.
Nor curl your lip nor tear your hair.
Nor quit the world in dark despair.
But bear it like a man of prayer;
The way is open, and ’tis clear,
Nor think the reason very queer.
To those who doubt we-say. beware!
The simple truth we do declare,
The comforts in this good cigar,
Named for Newnan’s pure and fair—
