Last Sunday Mrs. J. P. Askew, (the
venerable mother of our fellow-towns
men, Messrs. William, John and B.
S. Askew,) was taken suddenly ill
with pneumonia. Though promptly
aud skillfully treated by the family
physician, she grew steadily worse
and it soon became apparent that she
could not survive the attack. She
continued to sink until Wednesday
night last, when death relieved her
of her sufferings and she calmly fell
asleep in Jesus. She was an exempla
ry Christian, a dutiful wife, an affec

a most worthy and excellent lady,
whose death has cast a gloom over
the entire community. A sorrowing

who hare our sincere sympathy in
their affliction. She died at her home

; and jolly, and a delightful absence of the
, restraints that sometimes stiffen and
i hamper the most promising occasions.
A tabic had been erected about midway
between two immense poplars, whose
interlacing boughs completely shut out
the blazing rays of the sun, and this was
soon laden with a variety of edibles
that, for toothsomencss and wholesome-
ncss, would have shamed the skill of
Delmonico. There was enough to feast
a multitude, and the infinite variety of
culinary triumphs that graced the board
would have puzzled the veriest epicure.
A pleasing annex to the regular meal
was a lavish ontlay of ice cream and
cake, which had been held in reserve for
the enjoyment of the pic-nickers until
shortly before the hour of adjournment,
and (to use the language of “Doc” Nor
ris, who contrived somehow to worry
down four or five plates with one hand
while he fanned the flies off his fevered
brow on top with the other,) “they most I
assuredly partook.” Even Sim What- |
ley, (who yields the palm to nothing !
that doesn’t originate in the White Oak
region,) was obliged to admit that it was
“a line, fat, fragrant occasion,” and this
reluctant confession was accepted as a
conspicuous compliment.
We have neither time nor space to par
ticularize. Snificeit to say that the affair
was a most delightfnl one, and the par
ticipants are nnder many obligations to
Messrs. Hardaway and Hunter and their
estimable ladies for the pleasure which
their forethought designed and their
kindness provided. The entiro success
of tlie occasion stands to their credit in
tlie memory of those who were so fortu
nate as to be present.
, Among tbe visitors from a distance
were Misses Tommie, Yeta and Mary
Hunter, Willie Elder and Lnla Whatley,
and Messrs. Will Harris, E. H. Powell
and S. L. Whatley, of Turin.
