The Creswell correspondent of the Griflin -Yens furnishes the following items of inte est: The citizens of this place who sub scribed to the Atlanta and Hawkinsville Railroad are very sick about it. They sav- tliat they hate to pay their monoy'and then get no rabroad'. Col. Loviok Barnes, of’he Atlanta and Hawkinsville road, spent Friday night with your correspondent. Mr. Ira Mattox, of Newnan, visited liis father’s family last Saturday and Sun- dav. We stated last week that Sheriff Car- mical had raised $90 for the Lane fami ly and turned the entire amount over to the relief committee. This was only partly true. The total sum raised by subscription represented goods and other contributions as well as money. The money only was turueJ over to the committee, amounting iu all to about $50. The subscription list has been left with Mr. P. B. Murphey. at the FirstXa- tional Bank, togetiier with such other amounts as have since been collected. liveied by H. A. Hall. Esq., of this city: and at night there will be a grand con cert, particinated in by the pupils of the music department. Prof. Pendergrast is making elaborate preparations for the event, and those who know him will need no further assurance as to the com plete success of the occasion. Notwithstanding the oft-repeated ru mor that the Atlanta and Hawkinsville road w ould not go to Senoia, a director of the road stated to a Constitution re ■ porter last Tuesday, in positive terms, that trains would be running into Atlan ta from Sc-noia by October. It has been generally understood recently that the line known in the plan or survey as the Cresswell r,,ute would be adopted, and this belief has been partly verified by the movements of the locating and construc tion forces for a month 01 six weeks past. Three thousand tons of steel rails have been purchased by the company, and track-laying will commence in a few weeks. We would like some credi ble evidence of the company’s intentions other than the statement quoted above, how ever, before wo can feel safe in ten dering congratulations to our sister town. Prof. I. F. Cox, president ot the South ern Female College at LaGrange, died quite suddenly at his home in that place last Monday morning from a stroke ol apoplexy. He appeared as well as usual " hen he retired Sunday night and the announcement of his death was a se vere shock to his friends and family. The commencement exercises of the school began last Saturday, and would not have been concluded before Wcdnes- daj-; but in view of this sad interruption 1 lie remainder of the programme was dispensed with. Deceased was one of the most popular and successful ed ucators in the Slate, and few institutions stood higher in the estimation of the people, particularly in Coweta count}-. Outside of his circuit, we doubt if Judge Boynton is more popular any where in the State than in Newnan, and Lis presence here this week has been made the occasion of an ovation that will be pleasantly remembered by our people for many weeks to come. On Tuesday evening last ho was taken in charge by a committee of admiring friends and carried out to Hardaway A Hunter’s pond, where it was proposed to regale him with an old-fashioned bar becue and fish-fry. A quantity of fine fish were caught and cooked on the spot. A dair.ty lambkin of irreproachable pedi gree squirmed and quivered upo* the spit, whose unctuous aroma, mingling with the balsamic redolence of the sur rounding woods, so wrought upon the appetites of those present as to be abso lutely tan.alizing. The foregoing deli cacies were in due lime supplemented by. such dietary condiments as coukl he hastily gotten together, the whole con stituting r menu that lingered on the palate with refreshing fragrance long after the hour of adjournment. It was a rare occasion in many respects—just in- iormai enough to be delightfui, and yet not so informal as to do violence to the nice proprieties invariably observ ed by our people in doing honor to a istinguished guest. By 9 o’clock the last flauil eau had been extinguished and tho genial company wended their way homeward, tarrying only long enough on the festal scene to pay their parting respects to the honored guest of the evening, and to assure him by a ris ing vo’e that if he ever needed anything in thiscommunity all he hadtodowas to ask for it. Card of Thanks. We, the members of Nit. Vernon Bap tist Church, desire to express our thanks through this medium to those who so liberally contributed to the committee recently appointed to solicit funds for the improvement of the interior of the church. A SURE PREVENTIVE AN INFALLIBLE SPECIFIC The revival meeting at the Presbyte rian church is yet in progress anu the labors of the pastor and his distin guished co-workers have beer, rewarded in a most gratifying way. There nave been several accessions to the member ship and a general spirit of revival in fused into the church. Dr. Bnrkhead left for his home in Montgomery on Monday last, much to the regret of cur people Dr. Stacy i« being assisted at present by Rev. T. P. Cleveland, of At lanta, who is rendering efficient service in the good work by his earnest exhor tations. The meeting will probably close to-night. The adjourned term of Coweta Supe rior Court convened last Monday morn ing, with Judge Boynton on the benoh. Grand and traverse jurors summoned for the regular March term were pres ent and answered to their names as they were calied. Some were excused, foi different causes, but their places were readily supplied and the Court proceed ed to business. Judge Boynton's charge to the grand jury was clear, coucise and able, and when lie had finished it is safe to say that no member was in doubt as to what would be required of him in the per formance of his sworn duty. Several leading attorneys were ex cused on account of sickness, and this action necessitated the continuance of a number of important cases that had been set for trial. The day was occupied in trying di vorce cases and other suits of minor im portance Towards evening, howevor, became apparent that Couit could not last long unless lawyers and litigants furnished occupation lor the Judge and jury, and as there was a manifest disin clination to do so Judge Boynton yield ed to the importunities of both and dis missed the traverse jury for the term. The grand jury is yet in session, though, aud wi.l nrobabiy not be able to adjourn before noon to-day. The grand jury is a representative body in all respects, and considering the short session they have doubtless ac complished more work than any similar body that ever convened in the county. Judge A. B. Brown is foreman and Capt. A. B. Cates clerk. Solicitor-General Reid went home on Wednesday, and in his absence Orlando 1 McClendon, Esq., has been serving the Court as Solicitor pro tem. He drops in to the official groove as naturally as a duck takes to water, and by his kind and courteous attentions to the grand ju ry has won their everlasting gratitude. Sheriff'Carmical and Clerk Swint had not waited an a Court in so long that they appeared somewhat embarrassed at first, but soon recovered their official composure and proceeded to business with their usual veteran-like precision and regularity. Judge Boynton is the handsomest ju dicial officer in the State, not excepting even Judge Jim Brown of the Cherokee Circuit, and is as clever and conrteons on the bench as off. He is a decided fa vorite with the members of the Newnan bar. The visiting lawyers are as follows: GeO. A. Carter and W. A. Poet, Grant- ville; W. W. Hardy, J. F.
